IE 8 is now available for download from the Microsoft website. Some of the new features implemented in the browser are:

Activities, contextual services to quickly access a service from any webpage. Users typically copy and paste from one webpage to another. Internet Explorer 8 Activities make this common pattern easier to do.

WebSlices allow websites to connect to their users by subscribing to content directly within a webpage. WebSlices behave just like feeds where clients can subscribe to get updates and notify the user of changes.

The Favorites Bar, a concept that shouldn't be new for alternate browser users, is a toolbar that provides links to your most frequently visited web pages.

Automatic Crash Recovery, or ACR, can help to prevent the loss of work and productivity in the unlikely event of the browser crashing or hanging.

The phishing filter has also been improved, and the browser now comes with a more comprehensive feature called the "Safety Filter."

The most highlighting point of IE8 is that MS has decided to fall back to standards compliance mode.

Currently web designers have to either write two CSS styles, one for IE and one for others as IE try to push MS's own set os standards and render pages differently than others. Joining the others on Standards means life could get easier for web designers. off-course it will take time till IE8 is installed widely. Majority of web users are still on IE6 while IE7 gaining share. But as IE8 will have major user base we won't have to worry about putting up fixes and tricks for IE to render the pages as other browsers.

Well the difference is that this time they copied right (stole) firebug extensions and made of it their developers tools. The funny thing is that all the functions and even more Firefox already has.

You'll have to pay me to use a beta of IE....It's goddamn buggy in the final release, I shudder to imagine what a beta could be capable of.

Anyway, it's nothing new. FF steals features from Opera, and IE steals them from FF. Meh. :

Well the Beta of any software is clearly not intended for regular-joe user anyways, so I don't see any point fighting over it. As I would like to point out again, the significance of IE8 is majority for developer community as well as for end users. It's a welcome move that Microsoft is trying to fix what they did wrong with IE itself.

In the end, the user is going to use what's appropriate to them. Regular non-tech-savvy users will continue using whatever came with their OS (IE on windows) regardless the version, some brave souls and smart users will switch to FF or Opera as their choice of browsers... and nerds like us will keep on fighting over which is better (FF, Opera, Safari/Webkit) to the death in internet forums.

To me, improvement in IE are always welcome... as it makes my life easier to deliver content as web developer/designer while minimizing efforts. Today, I have to test my site in at least 4 different browsers (though in my experience, safari and firefox almost render the page similarly.. while IE is major screwup for CSS). I will always like, if my extra time spent on tricking/fixing IE crap can be used for something better... you know, like drinking beer or spending time with another human being of opposite sex.

I couldn't get the damn thing to run on Vista Home Premium (and this is a clean install of the OS). I did, however, get it running in XP via VMWare Fusion. Still crap though.
