I wouldn't recommend this method... if your mac is working even a little below par you will find some apps to be laggy and unresponsive... photoshop in particular. Best to get a third party app to do it for you... backlight maybe. Then you can just turn it off when things slooww ddooowwwnnnnn.....zzzzz.
but how would you do this on windows? just a question...
If I remember correctly there was/is a proggie called vital desktop for win which will do this...
