Question about my wireless connection?

I have DSL and its connected to 400 Mbps but when my lap top connects it's say 54 mbps. Should it be the same as my desktop. If not how can I set it to better speed?

Also I have a question about my securety settigs, how will I know if someone else is connected to my wirelessand ithey are how can I prevent this? I have a Dytex card and router....Thanks...

Keep in mind that the speed that the ISP gives you is in megabits (mb) a second. The speed you computer is connected is given in megabytes (mB, or MB). There are 8 bits in one byte. Thus 400 / 8 = 50, which is roughly equal to 54 MBps. You are connected at the proper speed.

As for security, your ISP should have given you a web-address, or IP address that you put in your address bar to access your control panel of your router. You will have to navigate through your CP (it varies from company to company), but there should be something to see what computers are connected, and also an option to enable password protection so that drive-byers can't leech off your bandwidth without you giving them that password. If you don't have it, go through your ISP's online help section and look for answers on how to access your router.

Your laptop says 54MB/s because that is the speed of a 802.11g router.

Isn't the speed of a wireless router 54Mbps? As in 6.75MBps?

Quick, somebody give thehundredthone a cookie. He's the first one to hit the nail on the head. Yes, 802.11g speeds are as indicated 54Mbps. So despite your connection being able to handle 400Mbps, your router is the bottleneck here. The only way to exploit your fast connection to the max is to get an 802.11n router.

Bout wireless security: There are 3 ways to protect your wireless access-point.

1. Hide it's SSID (Name of the access-point)

2. Use encryption (WEP 128-bit, or WPA-SK)

3. MAC-address filtering

If you have no idea what I just said, do some research. And no, google is not your friend. It's only a place to find answers. Good luck ;)

Of note: 802.11n has a max speed (as far as I know) of 270-ish Mbps. So, you still won't be able to access all 400 of your megabits per second. You'll need to be wired to do that, as of right now. Or ask those Australian researchers if you could get a GiFi unit.

And one more thing: the speed your broadband provider gives you is the idea speed. That's the maximum attainable speed you can have. But chances are pretty good that if you're using a cable connection, you won't attain that speed very much unless it's late at night. Or early Sunday morning.
