G5's Now In Stores...has Anyone Done A Realworld..

Hi all,

It seems that the new G5's are starting to appear in Apple stores in the U.S.

Has anyone seen any independent *realworld* benchmarks of them against Intel's and AMD's current 32 bit *and* 64 bit dual processor offerings.

Being a dual CPU user myself, I own two dual CPU boxes, I'm very interested in how the G5's compare to the current top of the line dual CPU Intel Xeon's and the current top of the line dual CPU AMD Opteron offerings.

If the G5's smoke everything else, I am considering adding one to my collection. nyuk nyuk nyuk!

Bling, blong, blung,

Got to play with one at the Apple Store here in town and I must say I'm impressed.

Very... no, extremely fast.

Unfortunately it didn't have any real apps on it to play with or use as a comparison.

All it had don it was OSX 10.2.6, AppleWorks and the i app stuff (iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, etc)

It was only the 1.8Ghz single G5 though... the dual 2Ghz G5 is due in the store by this weekend.

The guy there tells me it will have a ton of demo version apps on it to play with in the store.

Will let you know when I have a chance to look at that one.

wow.. sounds cool! (Y)

Can you tell me how long it takes (or how many bounces) to load iTunes once you click it?

im not buying a mac until they put 10.3 on the power books. i might just buy one right now and buy 10.3 later or get it from one of my friends.

i read some place that they bench average about 2x as fast as a dual xenon 3 ghz, and ocasionaly peaking at 4x as fast (the dual g5 2.0) with unoptimized software. Its like compairng apples to oranges though (get it hu hu) 64 bit to 32 bit. I think the dual athlon 64s should be able to hold there own soon.

BUt as of date its the fastest thing out there by far. desktop anyhow....

OK, im starting a movement. Seriously. People who say "comparing apples and oranges" when talking about Apple Computers, pisses me off. ITS NOT FUNNY, NOR WITTY.

I must read that every day, its a cliche now, not cool.

lost,

That's probably Apple's own benchmarking, and quite frankly I don't trust them, sorry.

I'm not putting down Apple, but their marketing has been disreputable for years now and until I see an independent review site actually benchmark a dual 2 Ghz G5 against Intel's and AMD's current top of the line CPUs, I refuse to take Apple's word for it.

From my lenghty exprience with computers, 20+ years now, I have found it is always best to do an independent analysis of a new product regardless of how good the manufacturer and their marketing team make it look.
