Leopard OS is also a built in file converter?

Is leopard a built in file converter?

One day my friend (A Mac Book Pro Owner with leopard as OS) showed me something pretty amazing he found out. He grabbed a image file --JPEG-- and he chose the rename option. Lets say it was named "ball.jpg" he changed it into "ball.png". The image type was changed into png.

We tried to do this with a video file. We tried an "avi" file and we renamed it into a "MP4". It worked. :o

Looks like Leopard does this itself. But is it that my friend is using an application to trick me? Is leopard really a file type converter? Stay tunned to the replies to find out?

I'm sorry if this is not the correct section to place the thread btw.

No it isn't, it's just that it gets the type from the extesion is fresent, but many programs read the type from the file, not rom the extension

Ok, so if I grab a Avi file and change it into an Mp4 my ipod wont read it?

Nope. You need to reencode it (iSquint is what I use)
