Firstly let me say i've been away for quite some time, but RL has taken priority for me recently moving house etc .. all non stop - so hopefully i can hang around again now things have settled down.
Secondly, i need your advice .. im considering a MacBook Pro and people have mentioned a product refresh coming soon, my question is, is it worth waiting? and when the product refresh happens, is it likely the other MBP's will be discounted?

It is hard to say for certain when the MacBook Pros will be updated.
But I think the answer lies within this question: which would you be more upset with; waiting up to six months before getting a laptop, or spending the Gs only to find out if you waited that long you would have gotten a better computer for your money?

definately the latter I'm sending this from my iPod touch much prefer better hardware for my mac so its prob hanging on a little while longer if I can
Don't take my word for it, but I've got buzz that new updates are coming as soon as April. Had it been just a processor update (Penryn from current Merom chips), I would've suggested getting MBP right now as it's really not that huge difference unless you're really into getting that 10-15% speed bump.
But it seems that beside processor update, there are couple of other thing lined up like graphic chip and new touchpad... anyway, take a look at following newspost for better idea : http://www.aqua-soft.org/board/showthread.php?t=47491
... and then decide if those features are absolutely worth it for yourself. MBP is pretty powerful machine even in it's current form and you won't go wrong buying one right now.
And herein lies the paradox.
The problem here is that the updates might arrive as soon as February or March (unlikely, but who knows?), and as late as WWDC (or later). So, are you comfy with the current lineup? If you are, just buy one now. If you always wait for the next update, you'll never buy anything.
But, if you think that you're going to need a multitouch trackpad and even more killer graphics, I'd wait. Just don't wait too long.
I'm happy with mine. I know that in less than 6 months a new one will be released that will completely obliterate this one, but this is a killer machine already.
2months will see a speed bump... is an extra .2ghz worth waiting for?
a total redesign is a long long way away... they're still using essentially an old powerbook shell (except a tad thinner) its a proven popular formula. Why fix something thats not broke?... I think in six months they might redesign it with a black keyboard like the macbook air and perhaps more spaced keys, but besides that not much else.
perhaps a larger multitouch trackpad... but besides the size, those features could be implemented with the current trackpad and a software update.

Well...let's see here. Hmmmm. I need to do some heavy duty computing. Do I get the MBP that I need to do this with or should I continue to use my iPod Touch?
To me, there is no question. Whenever you buy electronics, the near future will always provide more advanced features and cheaper prices. It's easy to get caught up in the waiting game. Go for the machine you need and don't look back (or forward as the case may be).

the current trackpad is able to tell how many fingers are on the pad, and it can also tell when they are spaced out or not... i use it for scrolling (two fingers) all the time, left/right, up/down...
Yes Levi... I know that, but current trackpad is capable of two finger recognition. While MBA's trackpad does three fingers (plus, panning gesture looks pretty different than current MBP's scrolling). Plus, MBA trackpad is very much based on iPhone multi-touch system. Though currently iPhone doesn't have too many gestures built in, the hardware itself can support many more as one of the apple patent has described.
My guess is that, current MB & MBP's trackpad is an early prototype of apple's multi-touch system while MBA's is better evolved version of the same.
I really wish that I'm wrong, and only software update would unleash some multi-touch sweetness. But I'm not placing my bet on that, at least for now.

Im looking at a MacBook Pro on Ebay for £500.00 with 3 hours left, its used, but looks in good condition and it comes with 1gb of memory, 120gb HD, Remote and Leopard Upgrade DVD - does it sound like a good deal?

That's the problem with tech these days. Buy a top of the line gadget and 3 or 4 months later a new one makes yours obsolete.

Have you contacted the seller? Requested more pictures, especially of it in operation? eBay is always tricky. I personally would just buy one new from Apple.
Or go with the Mac Mini.
