An image of a mysterious shape on the surface of Mars, taken by Nasa spacecraft Spirit, has reignited the debate about life on the Red Planet.

A magnified version of the picture, posted on the internet, appears to some to show what resembles a human form among a crop of rocks.

While some bloggers have dismissed the image as a trick of light, others say it is evidence of an alien presence.

The image is a recent Nasa posting of the Spirit's landing in 2004.

When the robotic rover set down on 24 January 2004, its images disappointed space-watchers hoping for signs of extraterrestrial life.

Now they appear convinced that this image provides the evidence they have been trawling Nasa's photo files for.

The blown-up image seems to resemble a figure striding among the Martian rocks.

The internet has been abuzz with postings offering theories.

One said it was a garden gnome, another that it was the Virgin Mary.

A third suggested Bigfoot, the hairy bipedal mountain beast that appears in various guises in a number of legends around the world.

But the consensus seemed to be that it bore a striking resemblance to the Little Mermaid statue in the Danish capital, Copenhagen.

Poster "Madurobob" said it was a statue "obviously built by an ancient civilisation that later departed Mars and settled Denmark".

Badastronomy.com tried to apply some perspective: "A man? It's a tiny rock only a few inches high. It's only a few feet from the rover!"

There's no life in Mars.

The garden gnome in the photo is just a stowaway who hidded himself under a rover's gear so no one at Nasa would notice.

He always wanted to be an astronaut and now is the first garden gnome to put a feet in another planet.

How do you know that there isn't any life on mars? have you been there? i know a hell of a lot about mars, so i'll try and shed some light on this matter:

its temperature is at an average between -140C to a high of 20C...

cold but not too cold to not sustain life...

its main gases are:

95% carbon dioxide,

3% nitrogen,

1.6% argon,

and contains traces of oxygen, water, and methane.

The sherpa people who live at high altitude have a larger lung capacity to take in the small amounts of oxygen in the air, they survive due to adaption of the enviroment.

Humans need oxygen, would and extraterrestial need oxygen? plants take in carbon dioxde would another planetary being too?

During a Martian winter at the southern polar regions, an ice cap forms made of Carbon dioxide or "Dry Ice" which does contain a moderate amount of water for it to freeze.

A theory arose in 1996 about life possible living inside the planet; humans have a natural instinct of survival, if there was/is intelligent living on mars, they would want to survive so moving inside to planet would be the only option. or the photo could be of a new civiliation growing on mars, remember that the photo is 4 years old.

I dont rush into things, i look at it in a scientific and logic point of view first then make my mind up.

i believe that it is a sign of life on mars, but not necceserily intelligent life, a martian primate maybe? but also remember that life doesn't always have to be intelligent, a giant reptillian creature to tiny insect or even a microscopic bacteria is still life.

and i do not believe for one second that that photo is a freak rock formation.

Do think there are humans on mars? mars was once like earth with rivers and oceans, if it was like earth long ago then it inhabitants would look similar to the humans...

also on the fact that it may be 2-3 inches high, think about this:

"somewhere in the universe there is, was or is going to be life, take jupiter for instance, a giant ball of gas hanging in the vastness of space, there are bound to be planets bigger, meaning larger creatures, possibly the size of our moon, we are but mere germs to them, or we could be the giants of all life anywhere..."
