seems legit, but it's strange because:

1) sent from a hotmail account

2) when i go to the site, i can't find the pages starting from this page: http://messenger.msn.com/Help/

anyone else get these? any confirmation?

Never trust anything you recieve in the email. Period. If there's an actual fix available, you can download it from Windows Update (in your control panel).

Besides, Microsoft doesn't actively seek out the users of its software when they want

you to update. Maybe if they were a little more intruisive, we wouldn't have had the splurge of MSBlast a few days ago.

MS really is starting to dispatch bluk emails to users regardless if they use windows or not (hell, i got this and a few blaster emails on my mac)

btw: there's also a critical directx update that you should download right away.

The email is legit.

They will send out notification, however they will not attach software, just links.

Microsoft never distributes software directly via e-mail.

We distribute software on physical media like CD ROMs and floppy disks.

We distribute upgrades via the Internet. When we do this, the software will be available via our web site, http://www.microsoft.com, or through http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.asp?.

We occasionally send e-mail to customers to inform them that upgrades are available. However, the e-mail will only provide links to the download sites -- we will never attach the software itself to the e-mail. The links will always lead to either our web site or our FTP site, never to a third-party site.

We always use Authenticode to digitally sign our products and allow you to ensure that they have not been tampered with.

If you receive an e-mail that claims to contain software from Microsoft, do not run the attachment. The safest course of action is to delete the mail altogether. If you would like to take additional action, report the e-mail to the sender's Internet Service Provider. Most ISPs provide an "abuse" userid for this purpose.

whether it's genuine or not it doesn't really matter for me since i update frequently but whatever it is, i don't fancy getting the same email 11 times. i don't even get that much spam!

i woke up and i received another 8 of those emails. if it's spam, it's more than i've ever gotten before, and if it's real, they must really want us to update.

the links that they give look legit, but it's really hard to tell. i can't navigate to those pages.

as for updating, windows messenger 4.7 was listed in windows update before, but NOT for security reasons.

Don't know why MS is spamming everyone though.

if they're legit, i think ms is really trying to push for the updates. maybe a software glitch?

i can't seem to find any information about this on any microsoft sites, though and that seems suspicious. <_<

Microsoft is smart, but that doesnt mean all of their services are.

Take for example, I only received one of those emails, so they arent spamming. When i Sent DZ one of my applications and he received like 10 of them, that means that either the software on my computer faltered or somehwere along the line the email was duplicated and sent, which can happen pretty easily.

Its legit, I mean why would a hacker want to provide you with a software update.

Answer, theyre sending the update through hotmail because they know that the majority of people that use msn are kids who wouldnt know a software update if it hit them in the face. They post windows updates on their site because they know admins will actually check there.
