If you're cranking your iPod up to maximum volume and you're still having a hard time hearing your music...
1) Check under Settings -> Volume Limit to see if that's switched on.
2) Get your hearing checked. Full blast on my iPod will make my ears bleed, so if it's whisper quiet for you, there's something wrong with your ears.
I've turned the volume limit to maximum, and there's certainly nothing wrong with my hearing. My housemate has one from the generation previous which is as loud as anything, like it's unbearable to listen to at it's loudest - the volume on mine just seems meager in comparison.
Well in that case, send it to Apple. It should be really, really loud when it's turned up all the way.
One quick question, did you by the ipod in the UK, because if you do then you might want to uncap you volume. You can do this with ipod wizard. Here is a tutorial on how to uncap the volume with ipod wizard (link). Also a warning to all of the head banging ear bleeding rockers, apple will release a app on your or a newer ipod that can limit the volume when you listen to it more, the more you listen in one time the quieter it gets. This is because they are worried about getting sued, i miss the good old days when everyone wasn't so greedy, and didn't have to sue every time some minute problem arises.

Yer. I hope there's a way to turn it off. I connect my iPod to my home stereo a lot, and I crank the iPod all the way up (so the volume is dictated by the amp). I don't want it turning down every 15 minutes.
I just had a quick look at that wizard and uncapped the volume, it's now audibly much louder. Thanks!

i like the old g4 style ones, the new ones aren't very comfortable. Do love the "in ear" ones from the mac store though.

I can't get them to stay in my ears. I bought a great set of Philips in-ear headphones from Target for $19.99, they sound great with the iPod Classic.
The sound quality is lacking, too.

Yeah, but I recommend picking up a set of Skullcandy Full Metal Jackets, or Shure SE110s. The great thing about them is that since they're canalbuds, you don't need to crank your iPod up so much, so they save your hearing. The sound quality on those two, especially for the price, is absolutely excellent.
i have demented ears, earphones never fit 
also make sure you haven't put 'sound check' as on, sometimes that saps so much volume
which brand you are talking about, i am using sony and they are enough good.
i had in-ear head phones.. but they gave my ears a rash. .
so i use over-ear head phones now
