How do you take a screenshot with a video playing?

i saw many screenshots with video players running, but when i tried all i can see in my screenshot is a black screen in the video player (VLC).....

can any1 tell me?

Some players offer the ability to take a screenshot (I know MPC does) but that may not include the whole screen and maybe just the player...I'm not too sure about that. But you might just want to try it out,

Make sure you have "Capture Layered Windows" checked because it works for me with vlc

try checking "Capture From" screen because its working for me and always has.

But! I have found a solution! lol!

I capture the image with MPC, i capture a screenshot with rumshot, then i paste the MPC capture in the black screen of the desktop screenshot!!!

But does everybody there do like that??

Here is another alternative:

First open Windows Media Player, choose a video (*any* divx/xvid/mpeg/dvd video will be fine), and play it.

While it is playing, open VLC and play the video you want. Then close WMP and take the screenshot. Don't move things around or do strange stuff, just remember:

1. Put everything were you want, and open VLC and open the video, but stop the video.

2. Now open WMP and play some video.

3. Now play VLC, seek the video if needed.

4. Close WMP and take the screenshot.

In that order.

hmmm i tried and i think i made the good things but it didn't work...

edit : in fact it works easily when playing a video with WMP... but with VLC it doesn't work... so i will take screenshots with WMP! lol

There is another way to go with VLC, it will work for sure but it is more complicated:

First go to Options, Preferences.

In the Preferences dialog, check the "Advanced options" checkbox at the bottom right.

Now expand Video and select "Output modules", and select "Windows GDI" as output module, then click Save and you are ready to go (if you were already playing a video, you'll have to stop and play it again).

However, now you don't have hardware acceleration... so after taking the screenshot, repeat all the steps above and re-select the output module you had before choosing Windows GDI.
