Alternative to .Mac (dot.Mac)

Does anyone knows an alternative (free one) to .mac if you want to connect your PC Desktop to your notebook on the road without using Microsoft Remote Assistant or smth.

There is Not Mac, but I'm not sure of the state of things.

You could also try Log me in.

I've used this in the past, it's free and works on both OS X and XP.

I use Log Me In myself. It works nice, does what it says it does, and does it well. Only thing missing is the iDisk alternative.

I thought once to create a iDisk-Alternative, but if no one is wants it, it makes no sense...

But i see there are many searching for this.

Maybe I start to create such a thing for windows and if someone helps me for Mac too.

Well how would the whole iDisk thing work? Would you host a certain amount of GB per registered person? Personally, I would not let people just put god-knows-what on my personal storage space, nor my servers; for free at least.

I guess that's how the free-iDisk-screw-.Mac thing never took off.

I was thinking of a Google-based solution, so to use the storage google gives you and just wirte an aaplication, which connects to this storage?

So at least we have to create a shellextension which is connecting like this firefox addon, but is giving you more possibilities (drag/drop/delete)?!

I doubt that it is what people are looking for in an iDisk alternative. I bet that most people would want to be able to see it in Finder/Explorer.

It is called Gmail Drive afaik, but this it not an official Google product.

Instead, it uses your Gmail account to store files. Or at least it takes storage space from it.. I don't know exactly how it works, and Google is known to change the API from time to time so planning an auto-update for a Gmail-base-iDisk-alternative would be nice

Oh that's easier:

Implement a localhost HTTP server with DAV support, which in turn uses Gmail as an iDisk.

Then add that localhost HTTP server to My network places (? "Mis sitios de red" I hope I translated it right) and voilá! Native integration from the hand of Microsoft itself

Ah, that part is easy. Thanks for pointing that out. Can't believe I didn't see that.

I assume I'd be able to connect to it in OS X by going to Go > Connect to Server... in Finder?
