Amd Or Intel?

ive been wanting to change my computer for a while now, but as always, money is always an important factor.

im thinking of two computers, (just the motherboard and the cpu) but i need you guys' opinons. im thinking of getting either a:

AMD 2500+ Barton

or

AMD 2600+

im stil pretty clueless at amd and all, their ranges i have no idea abt, unlike intel cpus, which i have some understanding of. i still hae no clue in what mobo i would likely choose, not even a contender!

on the other hand,

my intel choice is:

Intel p4 2.4c

and

MSI Neo2

or

Abit IS7

as mentioned before, money is not easy to come by. should i buy an amd first, or should i save and splurge on a powerful p4? please, your comments are much appreciated.

I have the 2600+ w/333 FSB. I love it. The most bang for the buck ive got out of a chip. Im also partial to Abit/Asus mobos. I really dont think you will see a huge proformance gap between the P4 and AMD. Get a good graphics card and RAM. The biggest preformance jump I've seen in my PC is when I went from 512 to 1.5gigs of RAM.

asus boards are really good. as for the cpu, i'd go amd because the performance is comparable (higher in games, so i hear) without the huge premium. and you can get the 2500+ and overclock to 2600+ and save some money. (barton right? 2x cache is good, and it runs cooler).

My 2 cents...

I've been a user of amd ever since they got recognition with their athlon t-bird 1ghz. Though i did use a 450 k-6. AMD may be alittle late coming out with their "matching speed" with the pentium chips, but its well worth the wait. When i had my 1.2ghz athlon i had got it to run just as fast as the p4 1.6 ghz (with some overclocking ) Now i've got my athlon 2200+, running at 400mhz FSB, and i couldnt be happier, next week im getting my unlocking kit so i can get this baby running at 3000+ speed . When it comes down to better bang for your buck, stick with AMD. :own:

I dont know, looking at our Pi benchmarks, every intel chip did better than the comparable AMD.

But, AMDs are usually much cheaper, so I'd say go for that. Especially now that AMD puts thermal protection into their chips.

If you go for an AMD go for an NForce based motherboard. They top most benchmarks and you get a nice boost with the dual memory chanels. Also it has a very nice Dolby-Digital capable sound system on board that rivals even the best sound cards that Creative puts out. Not counting the build in ehternet, USB 2.0, and posible Serial ATA on the better boards. Asus boards can even be set to speak with a voice to tell you your systems post info. All in all with a AMD Barton based CPU and an NForce based mother you just can't go wrong. You couldn't pry mine from my dead hands if you tried.

asus a7n8x delux model. It is the perfect MB. I am so happy with mine. The only thing that missing is opnboard graphics for when i blow my graphics card. Onbard graphics suck anyhow tho. Dual channel ram is overrated though. THe preformance increase is minimal at best.

Persionaly i would wait a year till the athlon 64 come out and start to become cheap. The 64 bit procesors will BLOW everythign away.

Well, Asus is my favorite brand motherboard. Its REALLY configurable, great for overclocking, has the best BIOS programmed, very advanced upgrading, and really reliable. Erm, but if I'm not mistaken, Asus has a more widespread support for P4+... and possibly more performance geared towards the Intel side. However, Asus is still amazing with AMD's and that shouldnt be a reason not to go with AMD's.

Now, I preffer Intel Over AMD not only because of better Ram management, but it also runs cooler, and has a better capability of overclocking over most AMD chips. (And, besides, AMD's run too hot for my likings). Intels usually don't compare to AMD's in price, but the few extra bucks for the Intel is WELL worth it. (Not to mention higher Cache is standard with Intel).

And, Please god, DO NOT GET AN CELERON. Well, they are actually pulling up thier socks (Intel is making thier new family of Celerons higher in cache, its like a watered down version of the P4) but Celerons aren't worth it.

But, like people said before, Unless you're a hardcore gamer looking for that few extra FPS (and by few I mean 4 or 5), Either Side will do. Its all about the Graphics and Ram after all.

In that case, Asus would be your way to go. Asus *almost* always supplies onboard stuff like Ethernet and Lots of USB. (Most Asus motherboards come with an extra card to put in the front of your case for More USB).

Some of those options are standard on Asus, but do your research. (Contact Asus)

I'd go wih AMD because it uses the same sockets making it easier to upgrade. And yes, AMD does have a better performance for gaming.

Asus does indeed supply ALOT of USB capabilities. Wouldn't it be cool if everything used firewire rather than usb? haha

ill probably indefinetley get a Pentium 2.4C or maybe even a 2.6C if im a greedy little bugger, haha..

but the mobos i have my eyes on :smartass: are the Asus P4P800 Deluxe, which runs in malaysia about 500 bux which is about 131 usd.. a pretty powerful mobo and it has everything i want.. hhaha

also the Asus p4c800 Deluxe, whats the major difference between that and the earlier, cause its about a 300 bux difference...

after the decision, my rig will be complete. muahahaa...
