You can convert AIFF sounds to WAV using iTunes, by changing your Import codec to WAV via Preferences -> Advanced. Right click the highlighted items and select the "Convert Selection to..." menu item.

Yes. Like I said in the post in the linked thread, they're not that impressive. I was really saddened from Panther to Tiger because of how many sounds were excluded, and how quiet the environment got. If you download the iChat sounds (from aforementioned thread linked to), there are also more "Macish" sounds you can use.
