Best Finder clone

I'm pretty late to the party here. I've been using FindeXer with Windows Explorer for a long time now, but with the release of Leopard, I'm growing more dissatisfied with the pretty weak emulation FindeXer provides.

So, what's the best Finder clone software out there? I'm looking for something that best emulates the Leopard Finder's look and feel, and has basic functionality. Coverflow would be nice, but I understand that no Finder clone has that right now, though a couple of people are working on it.

What are my options, Aqua-Soft?

Try Nexplorer, I like it because:

  • Mac style scrollbars(Up and down arrows at the bottom)

  • White scrollbar when inactive

  • 3 nice skins (guipod, milk, panther)

  • you can use icon labels

I'd have to say Nexplorer also. It's probably the closest you're going to get at the moment.

Is nexplorer any faster than when I tried it last (9-10 months ago)?

best one is a modified explorer.

remove all the text and buttons. use styler to get the toolbar lookin right and finderbar (or whatever its called) for the sidebar.

then modify the icons using a program of ur choosin.

theres also menu mods that can be done. search for wint.

why explorer?-

fast, reliable, integrated with all extentension menus etc, non-buggy, themes with the rest of the OS.

etc. search. others can elaborate.

The OP has already stated that he is tired of explorer+findexer combination.

I had started such kind of a conversation a month ago.

"Nexplorer was quite a nice try although it is not stable. Fidexer is a really nice app but it lacks (IMHO) Column view. Does anyone know or want it to have column view feature.

Finally I have found. UltraExplorer. But it needs to be customized. If Aqua-Soft community help to change it design, it will be the next great app since RKLauncher.

My problem with NeXplorer is that it doesn't look like the Leopard finder. It looks like it's straight out of Tiger, or maybe even Panther. There's nothing wrong with that per se, but I want a Leopard-like Finder clone.

From what I can tell, there are some efforts underway to clone specific aspects of the Leopard Finder, mainly Cover Flow, but I can do without Cover Flow as long as the rest of the Finder clone operates correctly.

Also, I can't really try out UltraExplorer, alabanco, because the link given in your UltraExplorer thread doesn't work.

I have been working on a Leopard skin, but I need to gather lots of resources to look at.

A Leopard skin for NeXplorer, you mean?

#482067

just google Ultra Explorer http://www.mustangpeak.net/ultraexplorer.html

the problems with it I have already listed here

Yes, but I've been having trouble with it.

Try asking a fellow skinner to make one, as I keep trying. ;)

I'm not sure how feasible it is to use Ultra Explorer to clone the Finder, as opposed to just creating a dedicated Finder clone. But it looks like you're making decent progress; good luck!

I hope you can make something decent. NeXplorer with a Leopard theme would be very nice. Hell, NeXplorer getting updated would be nice.

Easier than starting from scratch but, the same could be said for Nexplorer. Nexplorer, IMO will never be as stable as Ultra Explorer.

Well, my concern is that Ultra Explorer wasn't made with the intention of duplicating the Finder. It can be customized to something reasonably close, but I don't think it'll ever be the 100% solution us Apple emulators want.

#482079

There will never be a 100% solution that is free for most Maculation apps.

Heck, I'm playing around making an Overflow Clone in DesktopX and I can't see myself releasing for nothing.

I still doubt I am releasing the Leopard skin.

It's not finished, because I have stopped, because of these bugs:

Traffic Buttons get a look as if a Semi-truck ran it over.

and the shadows turned white

I tried making a leopard skin before too and had the same problem with the shadows... any way to fix this?

and when I removed the shadows it was very flat and wierd looking

Try modifying it via photoshop.

I did. first i tried removing the shadows then it ended up with a very wierd looking "flat" skin and when the shadows were there they were black boxes (in photoshop it looked normal when editing) under the window
