I ran Windows (when I did run windows ) without AV software just fine. Nowadays though I recommend Avast, as it's lightweight and stands off to the side like a guardian angel instead of Norton shit that hijacks and welds itself to your hard drive.

I do. Antivirus programs take up so much overhead, you might as well live without one. As long as you don't frequently view porn, or click on links you are not sure of, there is little chance that your computer will contract aids.

If you scan your computer weekly with malwarebytes, you will have no problems. It will remove any malware you get with ease.

Believe me, you'll notice a huge difference once you remove your antivirus program.

If you feel like you can't live without antivirus, then I agree with the above post. Avast is currently the top dog. It's much lighter than AVG and as if not more effective.

Though I do agree that a little common sense in your internet habits, etc can probably keep you safe from a lot of malware, especially if you're a bit experienced with computers. However, recommending to the average user that he proceed with no antivirus is a bit foolhardy. A light, effective antivirus like Eset (paid) or Avira free is a much better option in the long run of keeping a pc healthy.

Removing your temporary files extremely often will only have negative effects on your machine as some temporary files are cache files. Removing cached files and the like won't really speed up your computer at all, it'll just give you a couple megabytes of extra space (size of a song).

It really depends on hoy many free space you have, really.

You may or may not clean your temp files, it doesn't matter. What really matters is to have about 1 Gb or more of free space in system disk. I dunno why, but having less than that on makes Windows slower (this is theoretically incorrect, but in practice it happens to me all time).

Seriously the first thing is to install decent anti virus, firewall and malware programs. Microsoft Essentail is good as is AVG amd Malwarebytes. Make sure they are set to scan daily and have auto update switched on. Run a program like ccleaner at least once a week. Keep Windows Updated. Most importantly is don't do anything stupid. Don't open unknown attachments in emails, don;t visit dodgy websites, don't use P2P sharing applications like Limewire

back up at least once a month, especially near signs of degradation or instability. You can always clear a fair amount of disk space by switching system restore off and on, therefore deleting all old save points.

I think this is the one people forget the most. Backup is very important. I lost an entire HDD because I didn't back up. Spent 6hrs 10mins recovering my HDD.
