Icons

Can anyone tell the difference between these two icons?

These are 48X48 icons.

Look closely now...

Icon #1

badicon.jpg

Icon #2

goodicon.jpg

Yes. The answer is yes. There is a difference. Icon #1 has far worser quality then icon #2. The funny thing is I realized this after staring at a screenshot of os x for what seemed like an eternity, looking back and forth from my icons to the icons in the screenshot. At first glance yes, they look perfect. But, after carefully inspecting each and every little detail, the dark truth is revealed. These icons are horribly, terribly, awfully ugly compared to what they should look like. Think about it. We have been living with these pieces of manuer all this time. I simply downloaded these icon packages from the various resources we all use. Take some time, look at your icons. Are they really up to the calibur which they should be at, or could be? People, we must revolt! We must demand that we get the proper icons! The icons at the quality we deserve!!! We must not sit back and let our lushis interfaces go to rubble, just because of a few lousy no good rotten icons!!! What has happened here is we have not been getting actual 100% for 100% quality icons. Well we have. We have only been getting 128x128 size icons. We have never gotten an official 48x48 or 72x72 size icon straight from mac. The people that port the icons just port 128x128 icons and then reduce the size on windows. This as you can see dramatically decreases the quality in the icons. There is no way to decrease the size of an icon and keep the same level of quality. It just can't happen. You can come close, but never perfect. To officially

have a 100% quality icon of reduced size then the original, a pixel artist must draw it out pixel for pixel. There is nothing a computer can do to emulate what a pixel artist does. The computer can try to guess what it would look like in a smaller size, but the computation doesn't come out perfect, and the end result is a flawed icons like this one above. Cruddy, destroyed, and mutilated. I say we beg the people with macs to make real ports, of all sizes for everyone! We want real icons! So please, do us a favor you mac owners and make those ports, and make with all 31 flavors. PLEASE.

Note: If you are using an icons size larger than 48x48 this does not apply to you.

man you just now realized that those icons look like crap? wow. I saw that the first time I saw em. You can easily see the jagged egdes from first glance. Just use different ones. I just use the Snow E 2 set and they look absolutly beautiful in 16, 48, 64, 128 and pretty much every other size out there.

#4363

well not sure if you care, but since i wont have my mac for long (THaNK GOD) i'll convert some things up.

#4367

that would be very helpful! thanks timan :-D

#4379

Ya thanks Timan. :)

Fellow. where did you get the Snow E 2 set? Would it be possible to post a link?

That would be very helpful! :D

#4501

maybe icon #1 is a bad resize of the original one, some icon programs make ugly resizes, thats why I use adobe photoshop to make manually the resizes, I trust more on photoshop than any other icon program that resizes.

#4508

well just need hosting now ;)

#4527

Sorry guys, I kinda made a big deal out this. Well, I though it was, but it actually isn't  because I now know that you can easily get the good icons. (I just had to do a bit more searchin ;):) ) For some reason I thought they didn't exist. I don't know why. I thought we were all stuck with these ****ty icons forever. (pardon my french)Mmr I also trust Adobe Photoshop for everything and thats why I used it. :) You can try it yourself, but I guarantee you'll get the same result. Anyone, try it. Just take any 128x128 icon, load it up into Photoshop, and try to get the thing to look just as good in a 48x48 size. It will just not do it. But, I'm happy now. :) Now that I got the good icons! :D

#4566

WOW!! And a HUGE THANK YOU to you Timan. Now let us pray at this time of war. Supposevly someone is attacking the site. I dont know how he is going to do anything if he doesnt have the passwords and such but they say he is so, let us pray...

#4567

what someone attacking????

#4568

Hey Timan ya know what? I actually have a small internet space that comes with my isp. I have never hosted much on it. (nothing like a site) But I can try and see what I can do! It has plenty of space for those icons though. :) If you agree let me know. :)

Hi,

Yes, I've seen tons of poorly converted Mac icons myself.

I got sick of it, so my solution to the problem was to grab only original Mac icon sets and convert them myself using StuffIt Expander and Icon Workshop.

It made all the difference in the world to me.

Peace,

Grusic

#4627

who ever wants em and who ever wants to be kind and post a link for the rest of yall message me up on msn or send me a pm (unsanity@cox.net)

#4628

Grusic thats a good idea, but where would you get the official mac icons in first place?? I know there are many placed to download mac icons from, but they are not the original jaguar icons, they are icons created by other people. I kind of want the real ones. Not some other made up ones. But if you did find a good source for official, real mac icons thats great. (Now if he'd only be willing to share with the rest of the community...) :)

Ok, here is a set of original OSX Icons, The link is in this page.

The directlink for the iconset is HERE

Now, download them, move your lazy ass, convert them, and stop askign for others to make the job:P J/K.

Grab the tutorial on converting the icons from xicons, HERE, follow it, and your done. You made them by yourself.

The set includes 131 common icons. IT is old, but Im surprised no one got it before.

#4693

Thanks for the link mmr, and I already knew how to convert them. But again thanks anyways. I wasnt asking you to do anything, I was simply asking you to direct us to a link which had the so called great icons you claimed you had, instead of just saying "ya I found some great icons, but I dont think Ill let these people see them. I think I'll just make them find the icons and search through the 100 billion web pages out there."

But thats ok. ;)

#4695

Believe me that if i didnt uploaded Icons is because i have no time to do so, to search for them, zip them and the upload them. Also there is a lot of abuse, I dont want to kill my host by that, since i posted ported icons my free host goes down more continusly. The thing of do things was a joke, it is better to learn how to than asking to send them, if other people read this, they will do it, instead of asking others to upload them. It is for the good of the community, not for my personal interests.

#4696

I'm sorry I'm not quite sure I understood what you just said there. But again thanks for the icons, I'm sure others appreciate it also! ;):D:)

#4731

Yeah I redo all of my icons also. I don't trust other peeps to do the icons, I like redoing the sets. I have all of them converted to regular icons now. I will have them posted shortly for dl. I'm currently setting up Iceman's pages and everything, since I am hosting all of his files along with his site. I will post everything as soon as it's done. Stay tuned. I have about 65MB of icons converted and saved in the .ico format, all of the images are redone in high quality 16x16-128x128. I will get everything done very soon.

Jmitch - the aqua folders will pretty much always look jagged because of the way that they are made. They are made to be 128 so they just dont look good otherwise, some people settle but i am kinda a perfectionist.

here is the link for the snow 2 e icons

http://www.rad-e8.com/

it is a great set and i have yet to find better ones. They look really smooth and if you search the forum someone has posted a shell32 using these also although it did not work for me as the shell was empty but could just be me. Anyway good luck

#4898

FYI, disciple has some time ago compiled several original OSX icons which were completely converted to XP format in their true size of 128x128 down to 8x8. AquaSoft formerly hosted these icons and these were later on carried by Duckie.

#4924

I downloaded some of those Icons, and the quicktime icons were not displayed correctly, they were not ported correctly or damaged, they had a blue color, which wasnt at the original icons.

#4928

Thank you fellow2000. That is a kind of you do that. Although I dont necessarily think the aqua folders were made to be only 128x128. Yes, they were created at a 128x128 scale but they were also created in all other scales. This is true because os x allows you to scale your icons to virtually any size. If you click on view options, under the view menu at the desktop a window will display various view settings. There is a slider which will adjust the size of the icons. Not incrementely though. They slowly become larger and larger and smaller and smaller according to how you adjust the slider. ;)

Clotz2000 you are very generous hosting ALL of Icemans files. Im sure your site will become a big hit! ;) I also tried re-doing all of my icons by myself. It turned out alright actually, but still did not compare with the true sizes of the icons. I will have to see how your re-do's came out! ;):D

GameBoyzGB, does Duckie still have those icons?! I havent seen them on his site. I wonder if he still has them 'cause Im sure those icons would be superb! :)

#4935

I'm currently updating all my files to coincide with Jaguar. My files that WERE on the site dated back to OS 10.1

I'll inform all of you when they become available.
