A project I'm considering

I want an iMac but it will be hard for me to afford. I am thinking that if I can find the shell of an iMac and then put a monitor inside it would be really cool. I could also add a USB Hud and but that in the back for the USB ports. I could also (Probably not though) add an external hard drive and connect it by USB.

What do you think?

I'll be honest with you, judging by your sig you own a macbook already. Which is fast enough compared to the latest iMac (which I own).

Better off just connecting a 20" or 24" display to the Macbook if anything. Or get more memory cause its not worth it.

Yeah I am getting more RAM. But I want it to look like I own an iMac so I'll try and buy the shell of an iMac and then put a 17"/20"/24" monitor inside... Then it'll look an iMac but really it is just a display. I am not buying an iMac just the casing for it...

Why not just get a Cinema Display?

#478941

Macbook with cinema display looks so cool, I don't think you would need an iMac case :P

But if it's what you want then ... Keep us tuned with photos

Well the Cinema Display is nice... but it is a little expensive... I can make it look just as great but a ton cheaper... also @Dream_Team... this probably won't happen for a while... I still have to find a way to get that iMac case... I might buy a broken iMac and use it for the case and sell the parts...

P.S. If any of you run into something on eBay or something... let me know... thanks!

Wow, I was gonna do this a while back. This is just weird. I didn't know anyone would want to do the same thing.....

#478952

Of course. The iMac is awesome but I don't really want to pay all that much for something I can get the same enjoyment out of it but a ton cheaper.

Might be a while for new iMac's. I would HOPE they won't die that fast.....

There was (and probably still is) a group on ebay that sell mac parts, in particular cases. They weren;t cheap though. I think about $500 or something which really isnt worth it.

I think they only sold mac mini and powermac/mac pro cases. I might be wrong though. Also, since they are real apple cases you could probably contact them to get an iMac chassis in, but keep in mind it would be costly.

Did it have to be the latest iMac or just any LCD iMac? You could easily get a broken iMac G4 on ebay...

im thinking

a- u wont find the shell of an imac anywhere.

b- it would be fiddly and not worth it (u'd end up spending more time, effort and money than jst buyin a new one)

c- u probably would never fit the internals in. seriously, have u seen how razor thin the new imacs are? can u imagine how long (and money) it took apple (let alone a DIY modder) to design such compact components.

Very true Levi. I'd probably be better off getting a cinema display. But if anything comes up on eBay I would try and get it.

Also @Wuzzie I mostly want the new iMacs or the previous generation...

An other suggestion:

You could buy a working iMac G4: run a VNC client like jollyfast or vncthing and run screenrecycler on your macbook. That way you have a real imac used as a secondary screen for your good computer, your macbook. Also it's a good backup computer when things go wrong.

Just a thought. Personally I think it's not worth it because the iMac chassis will be hard to find and expensive.

Have you done any hardware modding before? If it's your first project I'd highly recommend something easier and less regretful if things go wrong. How about for practise, bung an old crt in an iMac G3 for reuse.. or something like that... Maybe build a PC into a briefcase? That could be fun.

Heres a link to an iMac enclosure on eBay, and that sounds like a pretty cool idea.

*sighs*.... yep, I guess when it comes to the net, its always someone's allready 'been there, done that'... like what crazy fool buys an imac and pulls out the internals and sells the shell just for fun??? like wtf.
