What Program Should I Major In?

Yeah, I know, I already posted this at TwistedCPU.com..

So I'm going to start University in September, but I'm still undecided about what my interests are.

I already signed up in management. Don't ask me why. Basically, I want to have a job where (ideally) I have my own room, desk, chair, computer and air conditioner. I was hoping some of you who's job descriptions resemble the one I illustrated could help me out.

I'm strong in maths. I got a 100 in Algebra, an 84 in Calculus and an 85 in Finite Maths. I also like to think I'm good at drawing and painting. Check out some of my works and evaluate them yourself. Here, here, and here.

So I asked myself what I personally like to do. Well, I enjoy art, and mostly I enjoy computers. However, I absolutely HATE coding, and sadly, all the computer courses that are offered require students to code. I.T. would have been perfect, but I hear that the demand for I.T. is decreasing.

Then I considered graphics design. I am fluent in Photoshop, and I enjoy it. I also know how to make website using Dreamweaver, Flash and plain ol' HTML.

So there you have it. My interests and my strengths. Can you guys and gals please help me out in deciding what I should major in? I would really appreciate it.

The decision is yours but just to let you know, IT is decreasing at the moment but it has been observed to be sinusodal in nature, meaning that at current it is down but by the time you graduate it will be back up. Just something to think about.

My mom has a freind who told me her son made over $100,000 a year in IT. Idk if you will make that much because im sure the wages are differant from company to company. Good luck w/ ever you do!

Stay absolutely with management, sales or (only if you must) marketing, and improve your economics skills.

That way you'll have the time and money to do what you want; paint, sing, push pixels, etc.

Trust me.

Well good luck finding the right thing.

You may (or probably may not since you either didnt read that thread or forgot it) that I am a pharmacist. Working in the heathcare business is a great thing, (still) growing market and so on. I am not sure about the American way of the stuying pharmacy, but in Germany the combination of medicine, physics, biology and chemistry made it a really interesting thing. I kept computers as a hobby and that way I can still enjoy them. If I had to work with them I'd curse them.

If some IT-ish is a must, well, in Germany we got something like "Economics-IT". Its a mixture of Economics and IT. If you got something like this in the US, might have a look at it.

Or simply come to Germany. We got the world's greatest beers, after all. And MUCH of them.

You say you're good at maths... if you enjoy it why not do that?

people with maths degrees get paid more than anyone (except those with vocational degrees eg. medicine, law) and you can do anything with a maths degree. i've heard some it companies prefer maths and physics graduates over it grads cause they can solve problems better.

anyway... a word of warning... people who don't like the degree they're doing don't do very well... you have to have enough of an interest to do a lot of extra study.

Good in arts, math & inclination towards computers...

I suggest you build your managerial skills and take up anything that deals with Financial management(Math & Computers). After that, if you're willing, switch to Film Academy. try to go for the full series until you're capable of directing your own films(Arts & Computers). I don't think you'll go wrong from there because managing finances while doing big projects go hand-in-hand.

What do I see in your future? Maybe as a big-time director/producer for digital-based films.

Ok, I think I'm going to stick with Management for the first year as my major. I'll be taking the following courses: management, economics, calculus, and sociology.

I think I'll do a double major, though. In the second year, I might pick some business-courses, and some math-ish courses. And maybe even one or two computer courses.

@McTrinsic: Nahh.. I think I'll stick with Canadian beer. Its great Or at least compared to American beer, which IMO sucks.

Unless one absolutely enjoys business management, being a creative person trying to fit into the business world can be completely soul draining.

I know from experience as I did it for about 2 decades.

In the business world one will encounter some of the most callous, obtuse people that one can imagine and it is like slow poison for a creative person.

If happiness and career satisfaction are your goals, I would suggest putting those in mind first and the money, prestige aspect second, ultimately one will be happier and more fulfilled in the long run.

Looks like you have gotten some good, sound constructive advice...If I were you, fields in the Engineering sector are always 'hot'...

What ever career path in your higher educational curriculum you choose I wish you complete success! If I were (ever) to do it again, I would pursue a Graduate degree in Computer Science...

I don't really have any ideas for you but this is what I'm doing now (and sadly my free time has been cut short but oh well)...

I'm going to "The Art Center Design College" (it's a private college) in the state I live in to get my bachelors in graphic design. When it comes to computers they mostly have classes that pertain to commercial art, publishing, web design, etc. as opposed to IT stuff.

So I'm taking classes such as design, production, drawing, computers. You might want to look into a art school such as that if you want to work with computers but not nessasarily in IT.

I have been offline a while because I had to move to go to "university" but now I'm at my new apartment on a cable modem (whoohoo).
