Steve Talks About Future OS X Updates

The New York Times interviewed Steve Jobs recently, and in that interview, he spoke of future updates to OS X, the different pricing schemes for Leopard (there's only one), and more.

"I'm quite pleased with the pace of new operating systems every 12 to 18 months for the foreseeable future," he said. "We’ve put out major releases on the average of one a year, and it’s given us the ability to polish and polish and improve and improve."

Of Leopard, "everybody gets the Ultimate edition and it sells for 129 bucks, and if you go on Amazon and look at the Ultimate edition of Vista, it sells for 250 bucks."

hey umm at least they came out with a something new and updated it often, unlike microsoft which instead rewrote the whole entire thing making nothing compatile and still very virus prone and glitchy

Another person who hasn't used Vista huh. Leopard has about 3 new major updates since 10.4. I haven't had a single virus, BSOD, compatibility error or any other problem you speak of since moving to Vista, and actually CS3 and a few other programs work much better and at greater speeds on my personal computer. All of the computers I use at work have 10.4 and many now have 10.5 and it works great sure, but not much of an update for $129. As far as keeping my mouth shut why don't you heed your own words because you clearly have little knowledge on both sides of this argument because Vista is definitely far from a rewritten product, something many of us had hoped for since initial viewings of Longhorn. But I have already wasted too much time and too many words on you, you ignorant fan boy ass.

10.5.2 will be a software update after 10.5.1, not a $129 upgrade. Each new release you pay for is the number after the 10, (10.2 Jaguar, 10.3 Panther, 10.4 Tiger, 10.5 Leopard, etc.) So 10.6 will be the next major release that you have to pay for. Then 11 (probably in 5+ years from now) will be the biggest release, as in 2000 Jobs said OS X was to last for the next decade.

That logic is flawed because you don't have to buy every OS X version to use Leopard. Anyone can simply pay $129 for Leopard no matter what version of OS X they're coming from (provided they meet the hardware requirements.) You're not forced to upgrade to every new version of OS X, and the result is Leopard being far ahead of Vista after the constant evolution over the past 6 years.

The other problem with not updating the OS more than once every 6 years is that up until the release of Vista, when you bought a new Windows box, it's like you were buying 6 year old technology. Microsoft has tried to play catch up with Apple and has added many of the same features in Vista, but they are very poorly implemented compared to OS X (and yes, I have Vista and have friends who do as well.)

I think the Apple releasing OSs and hardware frequently is good for the consumer. It keeps them on the ball of technology and makes them aware that hardware standards are always rising. I work at Circuit City as a Firedog technician and I deal with many people having problems with upgrading to Vista. That problem is hardware requirement. They bought their PCs with XP back in 2002 and they still think it's brand new, so they want to upgrade to Vista. When I have to tell them "Sorry, Vista will not run on 128mb of RAM, etc." I can't feel bad. People are ignorant to hardware requirements for the future. So updating your OSs and hardware is actually good for keeping people aware rather than updating every 5-6 years and having a disappointment when your hardware isn't suffice.

The next Windows in "Windows 7", albeit technically there is a small release of Windows 2008 coming (which is more like XP SP3 than anything). Windows 7 is scheduled for early 2009.... guess Microsucks is giving up on Vista already! Here is what's funny: by calling it Windows 7, Microsoft is also admitting that ME doesn't count as an OS (I call it a virus).... do the math :-)

vista is the next Me, trying to be something more.

I dont care what people say. Vista really has missed the mark.

I have used Vista for a long period of time. Sure it has some flashy new features, but its resource hungry, full of graphical glitches and bugs (even on top hardware), and the current driver pool is small.

Sure many of these things can be counteracted, but it will be with a service pack... a bandaid fix for a bloated OS.

ME is generally reguarded as the worst windows OS, but it tried to innovate with a new look and features... windows XP then came along, created a solid and simple foundation and took many of the features from Me and polished them together.

ME->XP... Vista->Windows 7. anyone else see a link? or is it just me?

It didn't mean they had given up on Win95, Win98, etc. it just meant that technology was increasing at a rapid rate. By your logic, Apple gave up on Tiger after just two years.
