ISO Player (uses Apple's DVD player to play ISO files)

I have created a new Automator action which automatically mounts ISO's (ripped DVDs) and plays them, Thought I would share. (For playing legitimate DVD backups of course)

You need both Automator and DVD player to run this.

DIALOGUE VERSION

1- Open the "ISO player" Application. A brief instruction/welcome message is displayed. Click Continue.

2- choose the ISO file you wish to watch from the dialogue. (by default my application loads the folder Users>User>Movies>DVD Rips... but u can change this)

My application will mount the ISO and launch the DVD player for you automatically. The movie begins playing in Apple's DVD app like a normal DVD...

^ courtesy of Apple... It's Apple's DVD player after all... my app is just an ISO and App launcher.

To customise the ISO folder location;

1- Open the workflow file (included in the zip) in Automator.

2- go to "No.2" section of workflow. and change the "Start At:" Field to a location of your choice.

(eg- Zac's movies, at the moment its set to "DVD Rips")

3- go up to the file menu of automator and choose "save as" and choose "Application", name the application to something of your own choice.

4- Save the new app to a location of your choice.

To remove the breif instruction Dialogue;

1- Open the workflow file in Automator.

2- remove section one of the workflow file by click the 'X" circle in the top right of the section/

3- resave as above.

CONTEXT MENU VERSION

1- Open the "Context Menu" workflow document. From the file menu select save as plugin.

2- Choose finder from the list. save with name of your choice. quit automator.

Mirrors Please!... my file will expire in 14 days on the current site.

DVD Ripping.

If you need a program to rip DVD's to your hardrive, I recommend "DVD Copy".

It not only rips the DVD movie, but also its menus and ALL of its features. Its a simple interface and best of all freeware.

It will also make direct copies of DVDs if you prefer.

Too bad Apple DVD misses so much quality and have issues there. But this may be handy in leopard where DVD Player seems to be better :)

sweet... too bad i rip all my movies to vob's... thankfully vlc handles them. I may have to rip my next movie as an iso to try this out tho!

Is there an advantage to ripping into iso format that I'm not aware of? I try not to lose the dts/ac-3 audio while compressing the crap out of the video. obviously i dont know much about ripping dvds tho...

Yes. There is great advantages ripping to ISO instead of just vob, avi, mpeg, divx, other.

1- you can preserve all of the DVD's menus, special features, trailers, subtitles, etc.

2- You can reburn the ISO to a DVD, and have an exact replica of the original DVD.

3- because an ISO is an exact copy of the disk- no video quality is lost.

Hi all,

I have a complete library of my DVDs backup in ISO and am trying to play via Airport Express. I am completely new at apple software, coming from ages of Windoze. I was fooling around with automator to get to play these ISOs with DVD player, but was unable to get it to work. I was thrilled when I found a mention of your ISO player, but unfortunately I was unable to download it (both versions). I would really appreciate it if you would be able to send them to me (via email or otherwise) so I can use them for both entertainment and 'educational(!)' purposes...

I hope to hear from y'all soon!
