What keeps you from upgrading?

Being serious, what is keeping you from upgrading to Vista if you haven't already?

Don't be like "because vista is the suxx0rz" or anything. Be true and serious. If it's because you like XP better, then just say so.

I myself was just putting it off because I didn't want to experiment and risk it. But now that I got myself another laptop with Home Premium on it, and I had time to actually use it, I like it a lot more than XP. This made me make the upgrade, and so far I like it. I haven't had any problems at all with it to this date.

Yeah, I was using a friends and it seems nice, bu i just don't think ill be upgrading until my XP starts spazzing out on me...for use of a better phrase...but its mainly becasue im holding out to see what leopard is like, THEN making my mind up on vista or leopard in new laptops...

I tried it (non-activation trial run).

I liked Improvements under the hood, but didn't like the cosmetic part and overall it felt sluggish even on my decently configured C2D laptop. I didn't tried testing in detail, but it also seemed to reduce my overall battery life. Don't tell me that you can turn the visual eyecandy off and get speed, what the hell do we pay so much for Ultimate version then?

XP will still run me for another year most definitely I guess. It's mature, stable and tried. My work gets done without any bling-bling that hurts the eye and most importantly, I can make it look like OSX (Flyakite FTW). :)

So unless, I see overall response to SP1 Vista and till it's get more matured, widely supported (read: proper drivers from hardware makers and apps). I'm sitting this one out as my main OS for at least another year.

Reasons why i wouldn't upgrade:

1.)The skins out there for Vista are "teh suxx0rz", and i certainly will not pay for WB after what happened last time...

2.) Some of my favourite apps don't run too nicely on Vista.

3.) I like the UI, but after trying Vista at my friend's house, it gets kinda annoying after a while.

To be honest, I'm working on the principle, if it aint broke, don't fix it.

I've finally got XP running the way I want it, lean and mean.

I've read so many horror stories about drivers, graphics cards, memory hogs etc it's not really encouraging me to upgrade.

If I was to purchase a new desktop PC with it pre-installed I would more than likely be happy with, but for the time being I'm sticking with XP.

Better the devil you know and all that. ;)

My laptop does not meet the minimum requirements for Vista (it's an Athlon XP 3000+ with 512 MB RAM).

Any new machine I buy though will certainly be running Vista (and not XP). The overall improvements in the OS are just too compelling.

Because Vista will never work with certain buildings and sections of campus due to the changes in wireless handling and encryption.

Yeah... Vista does NOT play well with corporate/educational networks.

Indeed; every time we get a new shipment of PCs, they gotta wipe off Vista in favour of XP Pro.

From what I hear they had problems joining the school's domain. Strange, as we can still use our Vistafied machines in the ROTC offices, they run fine accessing the schools servers and shared storage systems.

Why I am not upgrading.

1. My current machine would need to be seriously upgrade before Vista would run decently.

2. UAC

3. Vista does some strange things regarding data generated by programs in the "Programs" folder. Some games like World of Warcraft having issues with this thus players have to use work arounds such as installing in non default locations. This can raise havoc at patch time.

4. XP is working very nicely. This not the abomination that Windows ME (/shudder) was.

5. DRM. I hate Digital Rights Management

6. Not all programs can play nicely with Vista. Espcially older utilities that you still need for work or to work with older file formats.

You can turn off UAC quite easily. I turned it off myself, and that got rid of that annoyance real quick.

DRM? what does that have to do with Vista? I Hate it as well, but it doesn't affect my Vista experience.

do i have to upgrade? who said so? In fact, what made you think people are kept from upgrading? Vista was cool and all, but i like XP. Until this machine no longer can turn on and do the stuff i want it to do with it as it currently is, the situation is unlikely to change.

Who said everyone must have Vista, i'll wait on till people scoff at XP the way they do about win98. Also, my soundcard doesn't work so great on vista :P

I'll admit Vista gave me some annoyances when I first tried to setup with my university network, SLUNET. I figured it out after a couple of hours.

Hmm, I actually bought Windows Vista Premium when our local CompUSA closed. And I got rid of it. There's no point to upgrade. I couldn't get my sound to work (the log-in and log-out sounds worked, nothing in between did). The games were really cool! But just wasted money. Nothing felt like was added, just moved. It took me forever to find out how to add My Computer to my desktop, when they just moved it to the sidebar of the Personalization window. It was more frustrating to relearn anything.

We use 802.1X encryption with our own validation servers. On top of that, we automatically blacklist computers for excessive ARP requests.

Vista does these two things fine in conjunction with SOME routers, SOME of the time. Our brand new fancy School of Management? Nope. (sucks for our business majors xD)

Oh, btw. SLPL has wifi? Fancy!

Its annoying. I used it for 4months or so.

It was great for the first month, with all the eye candy and new features. But then when I realised the amount of bugs, and things that used to be so simple in Windows XP (batch file rename and reorder for example) have been changed and one must why change something if its not broke???

I began to find it irritating and time consuming to use.

its an operating system bogged down in its features that it neglects a solid foundation. imho.

a customised windows XP is still the best OS... or maybe a customised OSX :P . all xp lacks is 'search as you type' integrated into every explorer window -something i find hard to live without.

Simply just because I'm still using my old slow computer.

Though I'm planning to buy a new laptop in a few months, I often still have second thoughts about upgrading.

They say, Vista is not so keen about running games. My brother is planning to upgrade his in a few weeks, so I'd like to try first (on his puter) what it's like.

I have tried it very briefly and really I haven't formed an opinion on it just yet. I'm quite happy with XP right now. However, MS has gotten enough complaints on it to allow people who have purchased a new computer with Vista to downgrade to XP until somewhere around April 08. MS also knows how many people have not upgraded and rumor has it there will be a service pack 3 released for XP early 08. It is supposed to include some of the functionality from Vista. They know it's crap.

Yeah, SLU's ITS (Information Technology Services) was warning students in the Spring Semester not to try use Vista machines with the network. Most people had no trouble connecting, but authentification was a pain the rear.

We've Wifi (only at Schlafly since 2005), and rolled it out for the rest of the system last year. We're *just now* turning on the USB ports at SLPL. This is after every other system in the area has had them available for years. SLPL is *different.*

Try running HD content on non-compliant hardware, like outdated graphics cards, or analogous equipment . Vista will then actively reduce the quality of the HD content. (Ripped HD-DVD movies are typically handled this way by Vista). While you may or may not notice it, it's still a drain on the system because Vista silently enforces DRM in the background, without any warning.

Meanwhile, the same media will run at full quality on the same machine with Windows XP and Linux.. :slant:

Upgrade? Psh. Last week, I went out and bought a fricking external HD, backed up what I wanted, formatted my laptop's hard drive, and re-installed Windows XP MCE.

This was after 10 months with Vista. IMO, XP is just better: faster (omFg, so much faster) , more stable, and, with some work, better-looking.

Well, I upgraded to Vista as soon as it was available. I liked it, but then noticed I couldn't use half of my programs. Then I switched back and dual booted it. I'm still dual booting to this day. Just testing out software and playing around with it and stuff. Just to get a kick out of it.
