x86-64 ?

I was reading a few wikis...

What are the benifits of running a 64 bit OS compared to a 32 bit one?

I see the x86-64 instruction set, I'm wondering if that means a 32-bit/64-bit hybrid operating system is possible. Such as, since it's a hybrid, 64-bit features could work, and yet 32-bit drivers (when needed) could be used as perhaps a failsafe, and 32-bit only programs would also run.

I do know that Windows 98 was a 16/32bit hybrid operating system... I'm just philosiphating the idea of a 32/64bit hybrid... So, any info on this?

x86-64 means that you can run both a 32 bit OS and a 64 bit one. I'd rate it around 7 on a scale of 10. If you run an x64 OS, you get better speeds (esp. on apps that use more processor cycles, heavy graphics and the type and while multitasking). A 32 bit OS will give you normal performance but added compatibility with drivers and software.
