iMac Software Piracy

I was chatting to a mate earlier about his iMac and he says he pirates alot of his software from torrents. He said there is no way for Apple to catch him doing it and that it is perfectly safe.

Is he right or can Apple actually catch you pirating there software?

this will get you banned.

I wasn't asking for links or anything, just if he was right or not. I think that pirating stuff is wrong and that people who make the programs should be paid for their hard work.

Apple could conceivably catch you pirating their own software (like iWork), but if you're downloading another company's programs from a torrent on a Macintosh, there's nothing Apple can do.

Just out of interest, how would Apple go about catching you?

when you install iWork, they probably have some number or checksum logged somewhere that it is pirated; thus when you install it, then when OS X calls home for some reason, Apple will notice the matching ##s.

They cant actually catch you while your downloading it, but rather when you install it. Why? Because thats the whole point of trackers and downloading from other peers rather than standard ftp/http.

Its kinda complicated, but thats basically how it would work.

Your original question had some relevance. This is officially off the deep end.
