iMac RAM upgrade

Hiya,

As some as you already know from my previous thread that I am going to be buying a new iMac fairly soon. When I buy my iMac I only want to buy it with 1gb of RAM, but knowing me I will eventually want to upgrade to 2GB and so on. How would I go about upgrading my RAM in the new iMac (http://www.apple.com/imac/). Do they have a certain amount of slots for the RAM, or do they come with whatever is already in them and there is no way I can change that.

Hope you guys can help or give me a link to a site/tutorial that can probs help me!

I'm not too sure on the newer iMacs, but on my MacBook, there are two slots for RAM and it's best if you have two sticks of the same size, instead of (for example) one 512 MB stick and one 1 GB stick.

both the 20" and the 24" have:

2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667 MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM slots

with a maximum of 4.0GB of RAM

Wow thanks for both of the links guys! I never thought it would be that easy, just to unscrew the bottom and slot them in, I was pictureing removing the whole face of the iMac and having to find it somewhere within all the wire and stuff.

Just another quick question - There seem to be loads of places to buy the RAM, where is the cheapest/most reliable place to get it from? (Ill order to the internet so don't worry about location!)

Memory is so cheap these days.

Crucial.com does a good job of delivering solid quality RAM as well, and if you're a bargain hunter go and search for some on tigerdirect.com

It couldn't be easier. There is only one screw. Remove it. Remove the old memory stick(s). Add the new memory. Replace the screw and the panel. Do a little dance because you're done. If you still need to see a video I think there's one at macsales > support.

Glad you got it all resolved BTW- when you put that screw back in make sure you tuck that little 'flap' inside the machine well. Some people are getting it caught with the panel, and when you move the machine it tugs the memory out.

Thanks for the tip. My mate done that and he broke the tab. Well he claims to anyway I haven't actually seen it lol.

Broke the tab? Do you mean the little plastic like paper flap? How could he break it? Do you mean tear it? If so then he must have been really, really pulling hard on it Hope they didn't damage anything else.
