File Compression Mess Up

I am trying to make my laptop faster, disabling aero, deleting unwanted files etc.. and I started going around and compressing program files and system files.. Well now, Safari and Windows Live Messenger aren't working.. Safari keeps giving me an error message when I try to start it up, and Messenger won't log me in. When I insert username and password, it simply gives me the message 'Messenger is temporarily unaivailable, please try again later' Except for the fact that I know it's probably something to do with the program because when I put in my password, I can't check the boxes which correspond to "remember me" etc.. As it should...

Anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Edit: Any chance this could be due to the fact that I uninstalled SQL Server from my computer?

Check out http://tweakvista.com and http://tweakhound.com for ways to speed up your laptop. One big one: As an admin, go to your device manager. Drop "disk drives", and select your "C" drive by right clicking it. Go to "properties" and then "policies". Enable the advanced disk performance. Note: On a laptop, no big deal because of the battery. But on a desktop, only do this if you have a battery backup device (UPS). Failure to do so can lead to disk corruption and loss of data in the event of a catastrophic power failure. As for fixing what you messed up, I dunno. Google each problem individually.

I'm very close to formatting my hard drive.. I really need a solution fast

What do you mean "compressing"?

i think he meant ntfs compression

Lets see, if you compress system files, don't they need to be uncompressed to be useful to the system? You aren't really saving system resources so much as hard disk space, and in return, you pay for it with a slightly slower system overall.

I hate it when I get handed a computer on which nothing will function correctly because the owner "ran some stuff to make it faster". Especially when I ask them what the software did, and they can't tell me anything more specific than "it tweaks things to make them run faster". Just...don't do it unless you know exactly what it is doing, and exactly why you *need* to do it.

I didn't use any software, I did it manually. My hard drive was quite full, so I compressed everything I could. I fixed the problem however by simply starting a new account on my computer... I don't have a clue why this fixed anything, but I'm guessing it was something messed up with permissions.

Like I said: Tweakvista.com and for xp, tweakxp.com Screw software. Do it manually. Edit some registry files, tweak your boot.ini files, and play with services (msi). Then, and only then, will you be ready to tweak properly.

Or, don't do that, since that's the kind of thing I did and ended up slowing my laptop down a lot... :P
