Neowin Is Dead.

Karma, or just my lucky day?

This is a statement from the Neowin admins:

This morning when I woke up I was met with an array of problems on the site due to the fact that a member was threatening DoS (denial of service) attacks towards Neowin. This has become a tiring re-occurring problem on Neowin since January instigated by a kid with too much power and no sense to put those skills to a good cause. Despite pleas with hosts and authorities this kid has got away with his unlawful activities against Neowin and many other sites (some affiliated with neowin) and continues to control a large botnet. Due to the fact that this kid has again seen fit to use his army of bots against my site and we are powerless to stop it we have decided to close down. We informed Rackshack to power down our server until further notice.

This decision wasn't easy, Neowin has been my life for the better part of 3 years, We have dedicated that time to help people and to help people stay informed about the latest news and releases for the IT sector. We don't get paid, we don't force anything on our members yet we are treated like this by a kid who doesn't even know us personally.

I am sad that one child can have so much influence on the web that he can destroy a service we offered for free to over 30,000 registrations. I have posted his details on our Neowin MSN community, you can view that here. I just want to close this message by saying thanks for your continued support over the last 3 years.

How about both?

Long live TwistedCPU! (Y)

I don't know why they would shutdown over such a little thing. I mean, all popular sites get this. Oh well.

#46312

Karma basically means that if you do good, you will be rewarded with good things, and vice versa. For instance, if I am nice and help a stranded person jumpstart their car, someone will be there to help me when I get stranded. Almost like 'Pay It Forward', only without Haley Joel Osment. :)

In the case of Neowin- they were rude to others, now someone is being (very) rude to them.

Thanks for the link, I know what Karma means though, I was more asking why DZ would consider this a lucky day, or Karma.

"The King is dead, long live the King"

Methinks TwistedCPU will take Neowin's place...

But that's just because I'm gonna be a mod :rule:

But, of course, TwistedCPU won't be quite as harsh as Neowin could be, I'm sure ;)

Ok, so maybe DZ will be, but I'm sure we can forgive him...

nah no way will twistedcpu take neowin's place not even gonna try and attempt to make a site that goes in teh same type of path,

#46323

Despite some people's feelings towards neowin and that community, it was a great site. It gave so much info on so many different areas for free, and although some people were jackasses, there were many more kind, considerate, and generally good people. I hope they get this straightened out asap.

Timan has it right - we aren't going down that path. We are taking things slow and shaping the site to actually have more content than just alot of pointless threads. :6

Seriously, if you are wondering where TwistedCPU is, we ARE taking our time to open the site properly, instead of half-ass. We rushed a few things with other sites in the past, and as you can see, those sites arent around because we werent happy with them.

Be patient, know that we will be different, and hopefully better, than Neowin. At least I think we will be, and thats enough for me.

Oh, and I was a Supermod at Neowin at one time, I have been banned from that site a total of four times since I stepped down. Over really, really stupid issues.

#46328

At any rate, i just bookmarked twistedcpu.com ;)

#46330

what gets me is, they unbanned him in the first place, that was the most stupidest thing, you know darn well if he gets pissed off its gonna be 10x worser than before. then some of the mods treated him like mr goodie good. was a joke.

#46332

who's the 'kid' responsible for this?

crap, I know people on that forum.

I feel so dirty.

They know linux well.

i had no idea neowin was that bad. i'm a neowin member and i love that community as much as i love aqua-soft and virtualplastic.

wow. :(

#46349

I miss neowin, it was the only place you could find some people, ofcource there are some that are bad, but I really liked it there :(

#46361

Neowin was great except for a few jerky people (some of them mods) who would start trouble. The way I understand it, Neowin was mad at kidd0 for stealing some of their code or copying their newsposts word for word. Something like that. DoS is obnoxious and immature, hopefully kidd0 will grow up some day.
