New Leopard Build Seeded: 9A559

A brand-new Leopard build has been seeded to ADC members. Well, the Select and Premier members, anyways. It includes a few visual tweaks:

- The iCal icon now displays today's date, even when iCal isn't open (as seen above).

- The Welcome video now includes the same song as the new iMac commercial ("Solar" is the name of the ad).

- There are 2 new earth-from-space desktop backgrounds.

- Spaces has a new icon

- Front Row is now an app, with its own icon.

The most significant update, however, is that many news sites are claiming this to be the "Gold Release". This means that it's getting pretty close to the final release version. Stay tuned folks!

What really excites me is the iCal. it was so annoying to not show the correct date when it wasn't open. Numerous times I would hand in my homework with the wrong date on it >_.

Hey that link you posted for McDevZone doesn't work anymore.

But, I went to the home page and the pictures where in the large spotted cat gallery.

So, anyways looks good. Although nothing has reall changed significantly, only the dock and finder colors/transparency and time machine. Everything else looks the same in Leopard.

While I agree that the new Leopard Finder icons have a definitive 'Blah' feel to them (with everything else being photorealistic, their very basic look stands out in a 'does not fit in' manner), I actually like the new unified look of the environment.

Regardless of aesthetics (and yes, they are important), what I am far more jazzed about are the following notable improvements:

- snappier, and a heck of a lot faster in nearly all Finder operations, and this is on both intel Macs, as well as 'lowly' G4 systems. On one of my PowerBook G4, 1.5GHz systems, the Leopard Finder runs nearly as fast than on the MacBook sitting next to it. Either way, it runs significantly faster than Tiger on the same machine.

- Faster network switching of wireless network - if you noticed how fast the iPhone picks up and switches from wireless network to wireless network, then Leopard will work the same - no wonder, since many of the iPhone's innards are Leopard based.

- New Mail.app, with all the new features that come along with it.

- iCal, with CalDAV awareness, ready to plug into Leopard Server's CalDAV server (please, please let there be some sort of Exchange plugin).

- iChat with multi-protocol support.

- Lots of little improvements, that by themselves are not that huge of a step, but taken together provide a nice evolutionary step forward for Leopard.

Overall, Leopard is as much of an evolutionary step ahead over Tiger, just as Tiger was such a step over Panther. While I'm certain that a Leopard 10.5.1 release will follow shortly on the heels of the initial release, I do plan on upgrading soon after release, once I ascertain that all critical apps I user are working well with it.

The most significant performance improvements I'd expect on big desktop machines, like the Mac Pro and Quad Core G5s, as Leopard will be able to full make these machines into 64-bit workstations. Now if only Adobe would get their head out of their ass and had made CS3 64-bit (it's not, and can still only address 3gb total meory per application).

Overall, I'm looking forward to Leopard, and to bring this thread back on track, I look forward to the Aqua-Soft themes 3.5 variations for vBulletin and Wordpress (Wordpress, pretty please :-)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't the iCal docklet for Yz'Dock (RK Launcher, etc.) do this for at least 2 or three years now?

Yay. The modding crowd beat them to it. How hard was this to do? A docklet for Windows has done it for ages.

Hopefully Apple will correct the UI, or another UI Mod will do this (like UNO but it will correct the glyphs ) and a new version of shapeshifter (wich can be long since every graphic has been redone in Vector)

BTW : The glyphs are ugly, but the rest of the UI (except the scollbars cause they were misplaced on the build I tried - about 2-3 px misplacement between the scroll and it's buttons - ) isn't that bad. Colors are a little lighter but you get used to it fast and it doesn't bother you anymore.
