Thats right folks, no need to throw down $99 to the iPhoneSIMFree team to unlock your phone; when you can achieve this at the wonderful price of $0. Using almost the same method that the IPSF team uses, the the iPhone Dev Team, created a free independent software to do unlock your iPhone.

Anyways, I think that Apple most likely wanted this to happen, because it means more iPhone sales for them. Kinda feel sorry for the people who actually did pay $99 to unlock their phones, and BAM, few days later, a free unlock.
Now, lets see if I can get an iPhone shipped up to Canada....

I knew it was thousand times wise not to plunk down any money on those paid unlocks (those greedy bastards)... This makes my day, nothing like seeing your lady smiling away happily.

I know we're all used to not paying for anything these days... but they did figure out how to unlock the phone first and was the first one to release it publicly so them trying to get a profit from their hard work is fine.

I understand your point here, but when certain facts are in light... such as they did it using free tools released by iPhone Dev Team (FREE being the keyword here). iPhone Dev Team didn't charge for these tools. Not only that, their software for unlock contain these BSD tools in distribution.
Frankly speaking, like you said.. I'm not against them charging for it.. but $99?? even $50? seriouly T, you think that's a fair price for just being first there? I think there is fine line between fair cost and greed here. To me at least, this looks most like cashing a cow than getting paid for your efforts (not to mention using someone else's efforts without paying a dime)
I went for it and bought an iphone, should be here in a day or two. Love to see that this is already in the wild for free. I have at&t and I am on a family plan, luckily my parents pay for my cell as long as I am in college, so I plan on unlocking it and using it with my current at&t sim. Hopefully all works well. Pretty sure the visual voicemail won't work, big deal. And youtube may take a little hacking to get working. Now I just need to decide if I want to add that mediamax unlimited data plan or just stick to wifi, probably the latter as my school and town are riddled with wifi. Overall good stuff.
This is pretty good news... But now I really don't know what phone im going to be getting.
Although I prob wouldn't of mind spending 99 if they unlocked the phone for me or if its some type of hardware.. but not for some software and which i would have to unlock it myself..
Wait, does this allow you to use the features of the phone without activation? If so, I guess you just cant use internet, mail, or calling?
