Difference between ICNS and Macintosh Icons ?

Hello guys,

I've had this question for a long time and i need an answer

I am going to use an example to explain my question.

I downloaded the QUICKLOOK NINJA Ed. OSX Icon pack which contains 3 parts:

* Pixadex

* ICNS

* PNGs

If I try to replace an icon (with the copy/paste in the information window procedure) I don't see the icon but a "ICNS" text preview. Here is an image to illustrate it :

As you can see, the one on the right does't display the way I want.

But for the icon on the left (which is not ICNS but macintosh icon (no extension ?) it displays well.

My question is how do you get those ICNS icons to display correctly ?

I've seen some screenshots (example: http://technici.deviantart.com/art/Desktop...97509?offset=80 ) where we can see those QUICKLOOK Ninja Edition icons in the finder.

Is there a ICNS-Macintosh Icons' converter ?

i'm pretty new to mac to i honestly cannot tell u what the difference is between ICNS and mac icons but i do know that

PIXADEX

is a great tool that will allow you to use, PNG, and ICNS as Mac Icons (and convert them if you want to)

PIXADEX is payware and can be found at

Thanks for your answer. Indeed I do know this great software and I used to have it and this is a good tool. I also use IconFactory or Lite Icon.

But does anyone know the difference ?

For some reason the ICNS paste into Info window method doesn't always work. What you need are RSRC files.

Iconverter is good for creating ICNS files from most other image formats. I use it to convert my PNGs to ICNS. Unfortunately Iconverter doesn't do RSRCs. So you need Icns2Rsrc to convert your ICNS files to RSRC files.

The paste into Info window method should work with your RSRCs.

Both apps are freeware, I don't have the links so try Google.

I don't see a previw of my PNG icons in the finder but just the same PNG logo for all of them. I think I used to preview them directly in the finder so is it normal ? How can I change this ?

Just hit Command+J in th Finder window and check "Show icon preview".

Generally, there's no diff'rence 'tween ICNS and mac icon file... ICNS is mac icon file... but it's not the only file, that contains 'em... There are RSRC or RSC files (ReSouRCe). They can carry one, or more icons (even a huge library).

I'd like to resurrect this thread by saying that I use img2icns for converting 128px PNG's to either a real Macintosh folder or an .icns file which then gets the thumbnail(RSRC) applied so that it's easy to copy/paste it. Just a hint. img2icns is free btw.

I was using Iconverter for a while, but img2icns has taken over.
