I am finally Microsoft free. but if you think about it, Ubuntu is very smart and it has a nice user interface. So if you want to try Ubuntu, I would really recommend it!

Yes, Ubuntu is definitely nice. It's fairly easy to setup and use. I'm glad you're giving it a go, although I'm not sure why you would want to be Microsoft free. Do you have a beefy enough setup to go Beryl or is this more of a work compy? (I find Beryl more of a distraction than efficient.)
Well, somehow I think Microsoft is just not very good, its incredible how Ubuntu boots, its very fast, and I have not seen any errors, on the other side, MS windows boots very slow, and its very buggy. I am going to have to delete windows, I need more HD space! I am not using beryl.
I use Linux from time to time on my friend's computer (as a guest) but it's Suse not Ubuntu. It's a fine Operating System (very customizable too) but my Operating System of choice is Mac OS X.

it boots slow because your computers slow, or you have to many programes starting at boot.. M$'s the number one operating system in the world for a reason; its not buggy, running a bunch of un-certifyed windows apps tends to bug up your computer though. Agreed Ubuntu and the linux family's very nice, but it will be years untill it amount to M$ or Apple (currently). Also beryl's so much fun if your bored:P

Google it. One persons opinion shouldnt swad you, most people familiarize Linux with Ubuntu, and dell chose Ubunutu (for a while) as their os for a reason; its userfriendly. Unless you know what your doing, I wouldnt step outside ubuntu.
I am not leaving Ubuntu, I am going to use it as a main OS, I think is the best, I have tried Puppy Linux, and It was not good. But when I tried Ubuntu, every things was so fast!

Comes chock-full with all the things I'd ever need to develop, along with any desktop environment I choose. When I tried Ubuntu, it seemed like a barebones, dumbed-down operating system compared to Fedora, which is more power-user oriented. 5 CDs is a bit much to download, but seriously, it's worth all the hassle, imo.
hmm, i don't know much about ubuntu, but im using a flavor of it, xubuntu. its nice, i thinkit will be my main os, but i will still leave my windows in the other partition just in case i need it.

Coldwerturky is right about XP starting fast. I had totally forgotten how quick it loads up until I was recently forced to reinstall on one of my PC's. With only a few startup programs, it loads hella fast.
There are a few things I don't like about Ubuntu: Installing packages is not as easy as with Windows and I need to setup the whole X11-server just to get the screen-resolution I want to. If Ubuntu gets more user-friendly, then I will try it again.

Ummm..Yes, really. I am *not a very ignorant user and also care about about user-friendliness as well as compatibilty. I recommend it because of these main reasons,
1. It uses the *KDE environment. Much better than Gnome in terms of both noob-friendliness as well configurability, it also supports a lot more apps, meaning more compatibility (though that's changing these days).
2. It is much much more userfriendly than Ubuntu. It comes with a lot of apps bundled, including some regularly used on Windows, like Skype and of course, Firefox.*There*are*even*proprietary*codecs*and*apps*pre-installed.*Something*seriously*lacking*in*Ubuntu. It also preinstalls and preconfigures Beryl on your system, right in the install even on an integrated graphics chipset.

The reason most people familiarize Linux with Ubuntu is because of the way it's funded by Canonical (Ship-It!!). My first taste of Limux was some five years back with Red Hat 7. Then I alternately loved Mandrake (now Mandriva) and SuSE. Ubuntu came pretty late but I did switch to it and use it for a long time (since Hoary Hedgehog, I think). But once I've used PClinuxOS, I find it hard to recommend Ubuntu, esp. to Linux-noobs.

Fedora was never much oriented to desktop users. That's why I left it (Red-Hat) in the first place. It is heaven though for developers...

Torvalds doesn't need something userfriendly and geared towards noobs switching from Windows
All said and done, the free version is as good if not better than Ubuntu. Of course, that's only my opinion. But it also comes in a one live-cum-install CD version. So what's the harm in trying it?
Well, every one likes and does things differently, but to me, Ubuntu is an OS I can trust. and maybe puppy Linux too, it was the first one I tried. very cool. Ubuntu worked perfectly on my Compaq Presario.

It depends on your choice... You use what you feel comfortable with. You can turn it to look like anything you want... Switching one distro to other too frequently is not a good Idea. I personally Use Ubuntu at home, Fedora in My office. They both have there places, advantages and other stuffs. but I definitely encourage a new user to use Ubuntu as its very easy to use and have a wonderful community. Its built that way. So if you are a new user and want to test Linux go with Ubuntu. And I prefer GNOME to KDE for simplicity ... but at the end it comes to you, what you feel comfortable with

The only way to get familiar with other Linux distro is to try them. And Ubuntu is just one of many user-friendly distro. A personal favorite of mine is openSUSE 10.2, although it's a bit outdated. 10.3, however, is due out later in the year, and will once again be full of cutting-edge software.
