Whats a good ubuntu dock?

There are some suggestions in here.

Please keep in mind that Ubuntu is just one Distribution among others and that it's generally just Linux with a package of preconfigured software and a themed Desktop Enviroment - what you are searching for is a Linux-Dock.

Some suggestions are kxDocker, Avant Window Navigator (you'll need a fully composited desktop in order to have fun with AWN), gnome-dock, cairo-dock, kibadock (it's awful to work with) and akamuru-dock (no longer in devolopment, as far as I know) and there's Engage (the stand-alone version of the one delivered by Enlightenment 17 (E17).

I went with AWM, as I am on a composited desktop. It sdoesn't offer the zoom-effect just yet, but it's likely to get stable Stacks before Leopard ships. Also it features the angled 3d-version shown in the last two beta-versions of Leopard.

ok i downloaded a tar.gz file from the awn site, but idk what to do with it?? how do i make it a program

You either compile it or (what you should do, as you don't seem to know how to compile yet) do things the so called "ubuntu-way", meaning: You find an Ubuntu Repository that contains recent versions of AWN (search for Trevino - he should offer the latest versions), add it to your Repositories-List in Synaptic, add the repo-key (you don't want to get a warning everytime you do apt-get update :)) and click reload in Synaptic.

You should take a look at the Documentation at ubuntu.com or read a few threads at ubuntu-forums.org for further questions. It's quite simple, when you did it once.

ok i managed to get it installed.. but i wish i could change the trash applet icon... i want to change it independently of my icon style like the other icons.. (pidgin, firefox)..

It should do that. Otherwise try changing your icon-theme, remove the trash-applet, change the icon-theme back to the one you prefer and then add the trash-applet again.
