Well, my Windows XP installation takes about 1.83 GB of hard-disk space... to make a CD with WinXP on it would seem to require about 3 CDs.. so I'd venture a guess at "no, this can't be done."
Of course my install is in no way a 'minimal' install, but I don't think you'd be able to pack it down to CD size even with a minimal components installed.
i saw on the internet sometime about a bootable version of windows, called something like "windows pe" and it booted off of cd.. but i cant remember for sure... and i dont think it was free...

PE means something like "Preinstallation Environment". In fact it is to build a preinstallation like on PCs you buy from Dell.... But it is not possible to make a "Knoppix like" CD.
Another thing is the ERD-Commander from www.sysinternals.com. It is a absolutely minimal XP, booting from CD, to repair your system... (a great way for the "Clickiebunties" to change the system files like shell32.dll, because you have something like an explorer...).
But you can't install anything.
Because Windoze is not build modular, and because it needs is pathes, and .... (e.g. for the registry, the tmps....), and because Windoze is not able to work with something like a ramdisk in this way: No Chance!

why would you want to do that??
it would be quite slow.. and you would have to assign a LARGE portion of the harddrive for settings and everything else anyways..
if you are looking for a way to make a PC without a HDrive.. you may want to go back to Win98 and get 98lite.. that way you can run it off of flash...
being able to run an os from a cd is nice, if you cant boot off the one in your hd, so your able to go in and fix fix fix, if you look on some of the "newsgroups" you'll see peoples own version of windows pe, has a few ui's and all, the standard pe from ms, is just a recovery console pretty much, no explorer or any pretty icons.
On Hardwaregeeks, there has been a discussion recently if it was possible to strip XP down to like 100 MB. Even if that isnt possible, I am sure you can be well off with liek 200 - 300 MB. So that shouldnt be the problem.
On Shellcity, there was an article about on how to boot 98 (or 98SE?) from CD. It works. So while I am not sure about XP, my personal guess is that it is possible.
I am wondering what that would be good for, though. You can hardly run anything from that CD. And if youre after some repair-boot-cd, you'd be better off with O&O Bluecon XXL.

Is it to be able to fix a non-booting hard drive version?
If so I might have a better suggestion.
