Anyone remember PantherXP?

Well hey, drfire here, or bigorange as I call myself these days. First time I've logged on in almost a year. I was thinking of reviving the PantherXP project but instead gearing it more toward Leopard perhaps it would be LeopardXP. Would you prefer it to be more based on Vista or XP or maybe compatible with both. What are you comments on such a concept?

#466614

definitely base it on both xp and vista

#466653

you just need it on xp, the people who have vista will soon revert back because it sucks

#466662

i'm not sure about that one.

------------------------------

I suggest you make it compatible with both.

Fire....you're alive! That new PC you're getting will be a great start for the awakening of pxp. And you know me, I'm in if you need a hand.

i used Vista for a day then reverted to XP

To be 100% compatible with both, there would have to be two versions. The Win32 API changes dramticly when moving to Vista. Entry points, calls and returns are vastly different. Yes, Vista has the compatibilty mode, but it just plain sucks.

Just plain bullshit.

uhh yea....i never said that everyone is like that....

i'm pretty sure PantherXP was before my time. someone mind filling me in on the technical details?

#466707

Just plain bullshit.

So telling me you'd rather use the old Win32 API while programming for Vista? Hell no! I'd rather use the WinFX platform, WCF, WF and make use of all the Vista functionality that I can. And besides, show me a single Vista included application that will run on XP? They can't. Why? Because windows changed things up on us. I'd like to see someone use RSCA API on XP.

#466709

Uhh... No.

#466710

The debate seems to be whether it would be preferred on XP or Vista. As Boog said, it would be much easier to code with Vista's API, as we all know Vista is geared toward making all those special OS X-like effects much easier.

Edit: if you're wondering what PantherXP was, check this thread

Ah good ol' PantherXP. 'Twas a good little app.

Just wondering, how much time and experience do all the major contributors have? I was just thinking if you had the time and über-l33t skillz you could actually make it as a shell replacement, but I don't know how much (if any) of the existing code could be used.

#466765

Well, if it's going to be done it probably going to be done for Vista, and the only component that wouldn't be coded by us would be the dock. We have permission from RaduKing from long ago to use his dock his our app.

#466826

isn't this the same project that has come and gone 50 times over the years?...and isn't there a ton of hostility between you and the other developer......?

*runs away*

#467023

Do it for Vista. PM me when your done and I'll tell you if its any good.

#467327

FreeLoader - LOL, you make it sound so easy.

I think maybe not revive PantherXP, but I'm in full support for a similar project, aiming for a similar goal, but as I said before, I think it should be an explorer.exe replacement (Which admitedly means much more work)

Just this time, try to make sure the project won't just die.

I'm no coder, but you can PM me if you wanna chat about thoughts on the project.

Yea, I meant making a whole new project with the same idea in mind. My first thoughts on the finder bar would be to have either the translucent style, or the option to have glass with blur, to give it a little Vista Leopard blend.

#467407

Just plain bullshit.

Quoted for truth.

#467416

drfire, you might wanna check out VSdigital - it seems like he's developing an explorer.exe replacement, so basicly a finder replacement + more. Perhaps think about teaming up? Dunno, up to you.

Also, TBH I don't think it needs the dock. Not everybody will want to use RK Launcher, was it? Either that, or have the option of completely disabling the dock, so people can use the dock of thier choice.

If you think I could help, just PM me, but I'm no programmer, or skinner, so I doubt I'm any use.
