How big should I make my myspace background? Whats the ideal dimensions?

I know you can have image tiled, stretched or fixed.
Im planning to have one image a fixed size, and was wandering what size I need
in order to "FILL" the whole page (with NO gaps either side).
Will the page look different (ie- with gaps) on different computers (with different screen resolutions and screen sizes?)
I have photoshop and know how to compress images, so the file size doesnt matter
Yes, the website will look different with varying computers and resolutions and browsers. You can work around this by tiling if you can or blending the bg with a bg color. If that's to tricky, you can use a simple pattern and have that repeat.

Im still deciding what image to use- I will tell you this though, it wont tile well because each side will look different and i wont be able to blend it with the background colour because ... well because I dont want it too.
The image is one with lots of contrast and detail.

1024 x 768 is a good size these days. If you tweak the css a bit, you can center the whole MySpace page so that it won't look bad and you can make the bg static so that it doesn't scroll with the page.

thats what i meant by tiling. as I said above, it wont work very well because the image has sides which dont match. and its a large image so it would look cheap if i had it repeat.

no i mean like a pattern. if you get creative enough i bet you could even use some good coding and make it go together like a puzzle and be an image... i dunno just tryin to think outside the box. I just use patterns makes it much easier, you just code it then your done with it and its the same on everyones screen...

yeah ive seen patterns work really well... theres a jelly bean one out there that tiles, but the particular images i am considering I dont want to be tiled. They are too large and detailed (ie- landscapes).

I just made my own MySpace layout (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/60565144/), i based on an existing layout, the background image is 1280x1024...

linwe that is pretty cool, add a little not cleaner script to that and you could have a really nice and smooth myspace... great start
1280 X 1024.... hmm sounds like what I need to do 
its an interesting idea you've went with too, instead of using myspace tables and borders, you've used the background to create a 'window'.... very nice.
I may do something similar.
Most normal people don't have monitors set past 1024x768. Especially if their using laptops. That's why 1024 wide is good. I don't just pick arbitrary resolutions.
