I find it curious that Apple took the Microsoft approach to the iPhone by making everything run as Administrator.
Last time I checked, phones running Windows Mobile have been incident free when it comes to security. And they have been around for years.
Go figure... Microsoft got it right with the phone and Apple hosed it up.

seriously. Do you remember when Mac OSX went to intel, and then all of a sudden the whole tech world goes into paranoia 'viruses! viruses! viruses!'...
And then real mac intel viruses did come, like kicking a swarming bee hive the internet press went crazy.
Apple released some updates. security flaws plugged. big deal.
I bought a MBP as soon as the intel ones came out, I still dont run virus protection. Call me nieve, but if you rely on Apple's software update it does the job (so long as you dont do anything stupid like turn off root password protection or go to suspeicious sites).
ANYWAY
my point is, Apple is VERY determined to see iPhone succeed. They're not going to just sit back and watch while the iPhone is hacked.
Mark my words there will be security updates within months, weeks or even days.

This however, is a legitimate security hole that Apple missed.
Will they patch it... sure they will. But it better be within days and not weeks or months.

Correction: When the Intel Mac's where released shortly after their was a worm that got access to the computer VIA Safari (Link: http://www.broadbandreports.com/shownews/72250 - http://apple.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=0...213203&from=rss http://www.securityfocus.com/brief/143 Not sure if it's the original, but you get my point). Im guessing this was just for fun as hackers like to brag about what they do and that just isnt there when you hack into a Mac. No offense there or anything, I'm not trying to pick a fight im mearly telling you the facts. There is no boasting when it comes to hacking into OS X.

Im simply saying that Apple has it relatively under control. Thier security fixes plug most of the security holes or exploits.
There is viruses out there that will do damage even to the most updated of macs... but chances of getting them?.... 1 year without anti-virus and counting.

It just doesnt surprise me that the iPhone can be hacked... and I dont think the security issue is that 'big'.
The iPhone is big. it makes a natural target for hackers.
And It really wouldnt deter me, knowing the reliability of Apple's update service.
It's a phone. Ofcourse, people will find a way to "unlock" the iPhone too. Even if it is much harder than it is on any other phone.
It would be nice if you could just buy an unlocked iPhone. It's even still functional without being connected to a network. It's a fully featured PDA too and when/if people start making software for it, just imagine what you could do.
I don't think apple will get around this. They haven't stopped us from installing OS X on our PCs, and I;m sure somebody will crack Leopard when it comes out.
It's cool that this has happened, but to tell the truth, it was gonna happen. Now more people will get involved and in not too long people will be walking arround with non-Cingular iPhones.

You mean getting access to all the data on someone's iPhone and using it as a bugging device isn't big? This includes contact lists, images, videos, any data they have stored on it. Windows Mobile is used on phones and I haven't seen them in the news.

It was hacked as in they were able to access and download the contents of an iPhone through a hole in the iPhones security, or lack thereof in this case.
Apple messed up, plain and simple. They have until Aug. 2nd to fix it. That's when the team that discovered it will release the details publicly.
Shortly after the iPhone was released, a group of security researchers at Independent Security Evaluators decided to investigate how hard it would be for a remote adversary to compromise the private information stored on the device. Within two weeks of part time work, we had successfully discovered a vulnerability, developed a toolchain for working with the iPhone's architecture (which also includes some tools from the #iphone-dev community), and created a proof-of-concept exploit capable of delivering files from the user's iPhone to a remote attacker. We have notified Apple of the vulnerability and proposed a patch. Apple is currently looking into it.A member of our team, Dr. Charlie Miller, will be presenting the full details of discovering the vulnerability and creating the exploit at BlackHat on August 2nd. This site will be updated to reflect those details at that time; until then, we have decided only to release general information about exploiting the iPhone.

Oooh. I guess it helps to read the articles. I found a very vague one through StumbleUpon and assumed it meant it was unlocked.
Just out of interest, does anybody know if there will be third party software availible for the iPhone? There is no mention on the website... I asume you just use the apropriate app to put stuff on (iTunes for music, Mail for contacts, etc)... So I have no idea what you'd use for putting software. (Knowing apple, it will probably be iTunes, or the Leopard finder)
I don't think I'll get an iPhone untill it has some more features, to stay up to date. By this I mean, in particular, expandability. If I can't make my iPhone have more space (8GB won't be very usefull if you want your entire music collection on it) then I don't want an iPhone.
I'm suprised Apple didn't put a camera on the front, however... who the hell does video calls these days? My phone can do it, and I have never put my finger over the video call button.
I found a good article on things the iPhone should be able to do. I forgot the majority of them, but when you think about it, it should really have a lot more features.
