Vista or XP (first post)

Hey, as my first post, I would like to ask a question. After many times fighting with my Windows 2000 desktop, I have decided to get myself a shiny new laptop. I'm on a tight budget, so a Mac is out of the question, so I would like to know, is there any difference in using FlyakiteOSX on XP and Vista? Thanks :D

#465067

hmm im not sure that flyakite works on vista at all...(?)

I would strongly advice windows XP over vista... I upgraded to vista on my Macbook PRO (bootcamp partition) and while it has some great features and is fun at first, after two months or so it looses its appeal and becomes REALLY frustrating.

just lots of little things are annoying- XP is far more polished IMHO, simple but good. Wait for the vista service pack i reckon.

(like batch file renaming, vista now reorganises all the files out of the order you put them in... why change something so great and so simple! that worked in XP?! GAHH... theres lots more keep discovering)

@ dgervin839: FlyakiteOSX won't work with Vista, so don't even try it or your system will be fu**ed up. If you wanna have the most complete Mac OS X look on a Windows machine, then buy Windows XP.

I use Windows Vista and XP and I like both systems. Vista has some advantages in comparison with XP and vice versa.

If you want to buy a Vista laptop, then be sure that it has got at least 2 GB of RAM and a good video-card with 256MB RAM. Unfortunately, most new laptops are too slow to run Vista good enough.

flyakite on vista as they said is awful but, a really nice alterative would be spearing the 20$ for windows blinds, using a mac theme, and getting vista

I have no idea who the develpper for flyakite is but i hope theirs futureplans for vista compatibility

#465125

I don't think Flyakite can be runned in Vista. I strongly suggest you buy a Windows XP, because that way you can have Flyakite, WindowBlinds with Vista skins, and a lot of games that are compatible with it. I have Windows Vista and its really difficult to find games that are compatible with it, besides the games that ARE compatible are horsh*t. Buy a windows XP kid, you won't regret it;)

#465129

Last time I checked, I don't think Chris had plans to make Flyakite for Vista.

It's a whole new beast and recoding everything to work in Vista will take a lot of time.

But you never know. Chris may be up to the challenge.

As for your choices... Noobs get easily upset with Vista. It's not the same as XP and there is a learning curve. Things don't work the same way they did in previous versions of Windows.

Maybe when they get their heads out of the sand they'll realize just how good it really is. :P

Buy what fits your needs.

Vista is perfectly fine, and works amazing with the lastest WB as an alternative to flyakite emu. He never mentioned gamming I have no idea why you brought that up.. but 'Quube' Windows has a backwords compatability option that allows gammers (along with software, apps ect) to play/run "XP tittles" on Vista; you should get your facts stright before you insult Vista.

#465136

I ain't upset with Vista, and I'm not a noob by the way. I'm just telling him that Windows XP is more easy to make it look like Mac OS X than Vista, and that there are more videogames compatible with XP than with Vista.

#465138

almost everything that is compatible with XP is compatible with Vista,

Rightclick exe/app/ico -> properties -> compatibility -> Run this programe in compa.... WindowsXP ... Volia!

Windows XP is more easy to make it look like Mac OS X than Vista

How is it easier? WB offers an endless pile of osx skins for vista. Objectdock, RK, AveDesk, all work on Vista,

In theory yes. In theory everything good about XP should be there in vista, just with extra goodies... If only...

They changed a lot of little things that made xp so simple and good to use.

* For some reason my new projector that worked fine in xp (plug and play) doesnt work under vista.

* File renaming has been changed, so that you cant order and batch file rename.

* the control panel is... a catastrophe! even with the new search.

* Lots of my old games dont work even under xp compatibility mode.

* The UI is nice at first but has its irks... and its hard to theme.

I could go on and on. Sure, most of these things I could fix, or work out a way around or simply learn how to do it the new way but, even three months on im still discovering little annoyances that just slow me down.

You cant do many things the same way as you did them in XP, its frustrating and its enough to put me off from using it day to day.

Im not a vista hater, I think it has some good, well implemented ideas that exceed past those in other operating systems such as OSX, linux and XP.

But I want to design an OS. Who's with me ? :P

How about reshacker/replacer?

Personally, I don't like using windowsblind.. in fact, I've tried most of'em and never liked any of the stardock products.. and so I really hope I can easily port my windowsXP msstyles to vista.

I've never used vista before, but just knowing it's another microsoft product, I'm ready to face another .. "We know what's best for your computer, so we'll stuff sh|t on your computer, so it can protect your computer from other sh|t"

-Tour of Windows XP-

"Using Windows XP is simple! First you'll see the large colored area on the screen called the desktop, and the narrow bar at the bottom called the taskbar.." - no dipshit, it's at the top ;P

But seriously.. they should rename their OS' to Windows Hold-Your-Hand edition, and make a real operating system..

but props on rebuilding the kernel & superfetch technology

Hm, what a stupid comment. Vista is an amazing os. Agreed, vista outof the box, does have a "babys-first-steps" feel to it, but said once again in this thread, Vista great if you know what your doing. Like turning off UAC and shutingup WindowsDefender. Take 20minutes out of your day to uninstall the prepacked software, no big deal.

/edit, I take ^that back, I didnt read "OS'" correctly, thought it was a burn explicitly towards Vista

#465166

Well, I didn't specify that comment towards vista... I even stated that I've never used vista before..

OS' = plural -- I'm just saying that microsoft products are generally like that... and that's what I expect from all their other products.

Too much control and limited user-control..

Even microsoft's ads boasts about having your computer do everything so it's easier for you...

I suppose lots of people like it that way, but to me, it's like a annoying assistant that keeps interfering in my work..

Defender.. and stuff like outlook, and the windows messenger that keeps refusing to leave my computer..

"Standards" mean little to them... they want you to do everything their way.

Take IE for instance.. office '07.. I mean, they're not bad programs... Msstyles is a great theming format.. but they only let you choose from their own media/luna themes unless you hack it.

and care to answer my initial questions? Reshacker and such.. I waste a big chunk of my spare time modding the system files to my liking

#465168

I'm waiting for the hack where you can't see your computer being remotely butchered to death because Vista thinks it's "Premium Content" and turns off your monitor. Yes, even if it's hooked by HDMI (sp?).

Stick to XP, at least until M$ realizes they should make real security, not ask more stupid questions and get infected all the same.

Wait three years and get Vienna.

#465624

Wait codename 'Vienna' has now been renamed to codename '7' Which will probably be a bit disappointing as well, but you've got 3 years to wait for the disappointment so sit tight until then :P

#465642

lol zonda.. if u wait for everything like that.. you'd never get over things :D

#466243

Wait codename 'Vienna' has now been renamed to codename '7' Which will probably be a bit disappointing as well, but you've got 3 years to wait for the disappointment so sit tight until then :P

It was renamed to seven because it will be delayed for seven years and have 1/7 the features originally intended. And Morgan Freeman will promote it. :P

I would stick with XP. There's no real advantage other than if you want to play the new Games for Windows scheme.

#466245

Well if you're getting a bottom dollar pc, get XP.

If you are planning on a mega machine, get Vista. You'll want it for the arsenal of new games to be coming out that let you play against x-box players. 7 will be good. They're completely redoing the UI. In 3 years, if it comes out, Mac better not be relying solely on it's iPods and *chuckle* iPhones. Sure, Mac will always have it's cult following, but I'd put my money on Windows or Linux.

I've been running Vista since release with 0 crashes.

Maybe budget laptops, but any mid- to high-end notebook will run Vista fine. My notebook has "only" 1 GB of RAM and runs Vista perfectly, including all the eye candy like Aero Glass.
