How Can We Get Access To These Websites Please?

Hello everybody,I am from China.I really love this lively and fantastic place,we from any corner of world would have a happy time here.BUT there stands a National Firewall against us from China.Everyone except us could get access to Brookmedia, geocities, angelfire or *.*.tk(Which is this country?)So we can't go through Savanna's site, nor Beric's site and so on.I don't know how our government could do this.Is there some other way to get access to these websites upon the National Firewall Please?

Difficult for someone outside of China to answer... any ideas DZ, Timan, contrasutra?

In the meantime, if you have any sites you want to view but have no way of accessing, try letting us know and we'll see about mirroring it somewhere else.

Cheers.

Proxy?

#45180

Thats what I was thinking. But you'd need to get someone to set it up outside of China. And if you get cought, I don't know what would happen. ;-)

Its a shame about the blocking, really. I guess you dont really have much of a choice though.

I suggest you contact the author of the files via this forum or email and ask them to put up a mirror.

Hello.

I'm French, and I used to work in China for one year 1/2, and I was so pissed off by that problem...

The solution I found was OF COURSE proxies.

BUT I was giving these proxies settings only to my friends - foreigners,

for two reasons :

1. If I gave this to my Chinese staff, these addresses would spread so fast in Beijing that after one week, it was sure that this proxy would have been blocked also by the Chinese State.

2. For a foreigner in China, the worst that could happen, using these proxies, would be to be thrown out of the country (of course it never happened !). BUT for a Chinese citizen, the risk is simple : JAIL.

And Jail in China is not like Jail in France..................................

So......

Up to you, man.

You can surf the web in search of the keyword "proxy"....

But I don't want to be the reason why you spend the next 10 years in a camp.

Denis.

Is China THAT horrible?

Using proxies in China won't bring any troubles to you.

I used proxies in China for the past 3 months. Nothing happened to me.

So just use them. Don't worry.

BTW, I suggest bbbear to search for proxies in Chinese webs. There will be a lot more such things than in English webs.

To all: China is not that good. It's neither that bad. So don't be afraid if you want to goto china for a trip. :P

They wouldnt let me in. I was suppose to go twice. One time with my friend who was a writer for the New York Times. The government wouldnt grant her access. I guess she's too critical of governments. ;)

The other time with my best friend, who's Chinese and was visiting his grandparents. The timing was wrong on that, and I couldn't go.

And don't get me started on Vietnam. I guess Asia just isn't for me. :(

So in conclusion, yes it is THAT horrible.

Is it possible to use proxies to bypass a LAN firewall set up by my college's network admin?

GP: No.

Because what bbbear is talking about is not actually a firewall, but a filtration system. Actual Firewalls don't work like that.

Then is there anything I can do to sidestep it? I would plug in to the college phone lines, but they are digital, and I don't feel like frying my modem.

Well, if you could gain access to the actual firewall, you may be able to tamper with the settings ;)

But apart from that, you're stuck. The firewall is between you and the internet connection.

What about peek-a-booty?

Thoug I must admit I havent heard about for some time now. Last I heard it was released and was working, albeit horribly slow. Better than not at, otoh.

The next thing that comes to my mind would be a list of download links (provided with the permission of the author/site owner) so that you could search for these files in kaazaa. I mean- finally a legal use for Kaazaa :woot: !

Have fun,
