Folderlock ... locked out

Arg. This goes up their in the stupidest things I've done. I was using Folder lock for well porn, but also my very very important archives that I didn't want people going through, and changed the password.. I've been locked out for 4days now I've entered easily 500 passwords of what i thought it was.. Now that "locker" folder is 20+ gigs I cleared all my files off that particular partition about to format butt... I cant lose my archives...

I was running the trial software which says on load "demo expires after 35 uses" anyone know of a way to kick that number down to 0 or any other way to bypass/recover my files

I'd say you're pretty much screwed. Have had the same happen to me with TrueCrypt. A brute force won't work because only older programs had the loop hole for you to do a character by charcter deciphering. So, unless you have a millennium or so to kill?

You can use your Master Key, which is your registration key in the password text field, and click the OK button to access your files. Master Key is available to registered users only. Enabling this allows people who have forgotten their password to use their registration key in place of a password to unlock their files. This option is checked by default in the registered version. You can uncheck it if you feel it would be even safer. However, you should uncheck it only if you have a very good memory. But for oblivious people like me, it is better to keep it checked, because it is the only way you can get your files back if you forget your password.

Did you explain that to the developers as well?

It looks like the program is $35 dollars, so if your data is worth that much to you, you could also buy it and go from there...make sure that you'll be able to recover the data if you're used the registered version.

it wouldn't necessarily take a millennium. it depends on the size of the encryption key. you could search for key generators for folderlock, i'm sure there's people out there who have cracked the algorithm.

then again, it could use something crazy...like a 660 bit key.

are the files really encrypted? Cause at the link you gave it says:

... it locks files in Windows, DOS and even Safe Modes... in seconds.

Additional Options include ...256-bit Blowfish Encryption...

So I wonder if it just hides/locks the folders if you don't use any of the additional options.

What happens, if you start up your PC using a Knoppix CD - are they visible under Linux?

You could also try to recover Windows from a time before you installed Folderlock (maybe this could mess it up totally on the other hand - but Knoppix should be safe)...

Any other linux distro should be able to do this too. Almost all of them come with a live cd nowadays, try using one to recover it. You could also try something like Bart's PE...

it has an option to 'Lock' 'Scramble' and 'Encrypt' I encrypted them , I did boot up in Ubuntu and still couldn't touch the files, and the files went visible when I ran 'Windirstat'.. I got to frustrated last night and formatted the drive.. thanks for all the suggestions though

... Folder lock is still toying with me... Because I couldn't delete it, its still lurking around on my computer "Locking the computer" cause I entered a wronge password 3+ times trying to uninstall it... although after a reboot I can still funtion it removed task manger from my taskbar and ctrl+alt+delete menu...

I just got a huge email from NewSoftwares.net that I'm now beating myself up about;

..... Once you purchase the full version, you are required to install the full version over the trail path (no need to uninstall previous version) and then enter the User ID and Password in the program that you get in your order email to activate Folder Lock. Once activated, run Folder Lock again, and instead of using password in the password field, simply enter the registration key in the password field and your files will be recovered without needing your password......

$25 is all it would have taken, I wonder how many people have had the same thing happened and been fourced to purchas it.

It's a good marketing scheme. Microsoft did the same with the new Office trial. After the trial expired you couldn't open / modify / use the files created with the trial. That being said, I've never been a huge fan of these types of encryption software, especially when situations like this occurs.

I've always found simply hiding the folder/file is sufficient in most situations. A majority of the time, you're usually the only one that knows / 'would think to look' for that specific folder. The only downside is when someone else does a search including hidden files...

Man i remember back when in win98 you could use hold down alt and press a sequence of numbers (your password basically) and lock a folder down and it would show up with "name_____". You couldnt access it in explorer nor even in dos without the right alt+sequence. I remember locking myself out of a 10gig collection of less than proud to be seen with video material.
