Microsoft Vienna

I heard that a new os from Microsoft called Vienna will be out in 2 1/2 years, do anyone have more info on Vienna, will there be dx 11 in the near future, now i wish i never bought vista ultimate at all, what a waste of $430, should of stayed with xp, what do you guys think about this new os from microsoft?

I bought Vista because I bought a new computer and didn't want to use a pirated OS anymore. Most of what has been said about Vienna so far doesn't seem to be too reliable and a release date in 09' seems abit keen considering there was no huge jump form XP to Vista when it was released, in fact, in Australia when Vista became the new OS shipping with Dell, HP etc. they allowed a choice between XP and Vista because people simply didn't want to change to Vista.

Anyway just google Windows Vienna or Microsoft Vienna:

Its barely begun to get worked on, nothing to think of or expect seeing how they haven't released any information about what they plan to add. Don't expect anything anytime soon. By the way since you mentioned Microsofts 2 1/2 year mark I just want to say that it's known that Microsoft can never make a deadline. But lately who can? Anyway, that 2 1/2 is more like 3 1/2 to 4 years I'd say.

At any rate I wouldn't expect to see anything breathtaking from "Vienna" Or "Windows Seven" anytime soon. Perhaps in a year or so, 6 months if your extremely lucky. But I highly doubt it will be any time soon regardless of what Microsoft says.

NEVER believe a date that they give. For instance if they say Service Pack 1 for Vista is due out at the end of next month then I'd give it 2, maybe even 3 additional months. At the very least you should double any amount of timeframe they give out. They are notorious for putting dates into play that they can never make. But then again what Software Developer hasn't missed a date they set for release?

So: totally re-coded from the ground up? They couldn't get the NT based windows right after revising it a bazillion times, what makes them think they'll get it right THE FIRST TIME? No way. Oh man no way. How can it be stable at all? Yeah, windows is screwed.

^ Microsoft wouldn't be stupid enough to throw out the NT codebase and start again. NT is fairly stable and performs well enough for the average user. It just doesn't make sense to redo it from scratch.

What I am expecting in Vienna is the shift to a more modular OS, a redesign of common Windows UI elements (something on the lines of what Microsoft have done to Office 2007 with The Ribbon) as well as the code abstraction (sandbox mode) Microsoft have been talking about.

i wouldn't mind a switch to a UNIX based system actually, if Apple can admit their error with the PowerPC chip and switch over to Intel without excessive problems, i'm sure Microsoft could at least give it a try... of course i have no idea what i'm talking about, i just like linux AND Windows programs : ) And yes there is the problem of compatibility that MS has been dragging for about 15 years behind them now..

Atleast they had the balls to make their own kernal, unlike someone we know.

I think it will be fine. The beta testing group they have is quite large and its only getting bigger... I don't understand why so many people are already interested in Vienna/Windows Seven as it has absolutely no announcements (or official announcements (that also goes for the names of the OS currently has as well) of what content they are changing or adding.

Same thing is gonna happen with XP that also happened with Vista. Their will be a group of people that hate it and label it crap, then when they put out a following brand new OS those people will repeat what they did with the previous one. Its happened twice now so I highly doubt it wont happen again.
