Hello every one, I was wondering if is it possible to make the start up sound that macs do but on a PC? Is there any software? The sound when you just turn the PC on, not at Windows startup...
Mac Start up sound on a PC.
I'm not sure a PC is technically capable of doing that, or any other noise beyond a boring BEEP at most, until it digs into loading Windows.
But if I'm wrong, I'd like to know how to pull this trick myself. ![]()
If I am not wrong, this can be done modifiying the PC`s BIOS, but I dont know if there`s any sofware out there that can do it...
I have my doubts that any noise other than a BEEP can be supported there, either, though the BIOS was my first thought as well.
Then again...how does a Mac do it? With a little speaker in the computer or does it pipe it through the speakers?
The Mac does this via the ROM, the ROM (Read Only Memory) stores some basic files that make the Mac computer work including the basic system sound.
i doubt this is possible, and if it is, im sure it would be kinda dangerous. modifying your BIOS to have it make a sound the minute your computer starts up would be kinda pointless. Then again, a beep is sounded whenever you get a BSOD...sooo...yea.
i'm pretty sure that the beep from the mac comes from on board audio speakers.
True.
Mac uses EFI... PCs use BIOS. BIOS is old, EFI is future... so don't bother screwing your BIOS to play sound, it's not worth it.
I was thinking it was the ROM that made this possible on Macs.
The Startup sound is terrible. I plug in some cut-off iPod headphones to silence it.
Yeah, I actually find it rather annoying, especially in a public setting. It's so conspicuous!

first of all i don't know what that means and second of all no freakin' way.
the startup sound is like...what...one of the only classic touches left from the original macintosh computers?
i especially love the way that the older macs boot up, with loading all those icons n stuff, i would use that as a boot skin in a heartbeat.
Thanks for the tip, iGo. I figured it was something along those lines.
That's probably also how Boot Camp can show you nice pictures and icons of your OSes before you boot.
Now a hack that lets Windows folks have EFI but still work right and without totally destroying the computer...that will be one to see. ![]()
wow, i didn't know that with boot camp you would use EFI... pretty cool. i have no idea how to use EFI...is it similar to BIOS?
what's up with all the blue anyways.
