Hi there, I'm looking at designing a website which will be completely Mac related and would like to know what the usage policies are with using the default icons in Mac OS X. What sort of license are they under? and is it OK just to use them or must consent be given before being able to legally use them publicly?

1. General. The software (including Boot ROM code), documentation and any fonts accompanying this License whether on disk, in read only memory, on any other media or in any other form (collectively the “Apple Software”) are licensed, not sold, to you by Apple Inc.
Basically, the icons are protected by copyright, and are licensed to OS X users for use in the operating system, and nowhere else.

Anyone? I'd really like to know if it's OK or not for me to use the icons, such as the ones used in the navigation bar at the top of this site, on my own Mac related site that I'm working on right now...
If it's not a high-volume site, you'll probably be okay.-NC
So you're saying Aquasoft is not? i don't know but i see Aquasoft's almost everywhere

you aren't supposed to do it, but you can, as if apple is going to search the entire web to see for stolen material... it's like youtube, they say you can't upload TV shows but of course you can...
Haha alright, thanks for your replies guys. I guess I'll just use them but make sure proper credit is given. 
There is also the issue of commercial usage. If you intend to derive and income from the web site (either through subscription, banners or advertising), then you are most certainly in breach of the law.
It becomes more grey when its not intended to gain income.
That said, the actual rule is specific, you actually are not entitled to use any copyright material ever. With a non-profit site, you will probably get away with it, but if you are approached to take the material off, then you need to comply.
Apple is especially fussy about violation, but it seems of late that they have also softened a little - more Apple branding out there means more exposure for them..
