The Fastest In The Land.

Well recently my friend bought a new sony vaio laptop. I decided to see how this stacked up against my computer. Here are the specs:

Sony Viao

2.66ghz Pentium IV

512mb RAM

DVD Burner

My Computer

677mhz Celeron

256mb RAM

DVDROM

CDRW

I used Norton Performance Test to benchmark our machines. The funniest part is that while his machine did out perform mine it didn't outperform it anywhere like it should. His final score was 140, while my machine still scored an impressive 110. I nearly matched him in math processing and dominated him in 3D graphics processing.

Anyway this gave me and idea. Attached to this post is my benchmark baseline file. Use it to benchmark your computer against. Or just benchmark your computer and attach your benchmark file here so we can all test at home and see how fast all of our machines actually are compared to other types of machines.

Why would you trust Norton? they are not known for benchmarking.

Get some MadOnion benchmarks, they are reputable.

SystemMark and 3DMark I believe they are called.

Well I DO trust Norton. And I'm using Norton because it is easy to compare two machines with it.

Why does someone always have to start some crap? :rant: j/k But seriously, just take the post as it is and don't throw semantics into it. I offered Norton Performance Test files as a comparison basis so take it at that. Don't make everything more complicated than it has to be. That's the problem with this world, everybody makes everything so complicated when it's really simple. If you don't want to benchmark your machine using Norton...then don't. Just thought it would be fun to compare machines with it.

I instead refuted the claims, its called a debate. I didn't flame you, I pointed you to a reputable company for Benchmarking.

They changed their name to FutureMark, and its 3DMark and PCMark.

They have free versions, try them out,and post your scores, and we can post ours.

There are known issues with Norton benchmarks, which is why none of the hardware companies or benchmarking sites/ magazines use it. It wasn't about starting crap. You'd know it if one of us wanted to start crap with you. It was merely being pointed out that Norton does not offer a correct assessment of a machines potential. This is one of the reasons why it reports that your system is almost as powerful as a 2.66 Ghz P4. You may want to believe that, but that doesn't make it true.

Use MadOnion benchmarks, namely 3DMark 2001SE or SysMark to get a pretty accurate picture of how the systems compare. You can find a free download of 3DMark 2001SE at FUTUREMARK (madonions new name).

Seriously, I don't know of anything for a Mac other than perhaps Unreal Tournament 2003 batch tests (included with the installation) or maybe Quake3Arena Time demos?

Does anyone else know of a good cross platform benchmark? I would love to have a solid Mac/ PC benchmark thread going.

No, Linux wouldnt work either, though it would be more accurate than OSX vs Windows.

The UT2003 test seems to be the most accurate test I can think off. Though Taha's iBook scored as high as my 2Ghz P4, 128MB Geforce4MX, 256MB RDRAM.

I guess RAM really does make a difference.

but that was just graphics, which I am not concerned about. I was hoping there was something that could compare the raw power, maybe something to do with math or rendering...

I was just thinking it would be interesting if we would all use NORTON because norton lets you save and compare baselines in the program. And that we could all benchmark our systems with it and then use those baselines to compare our machines to other ones.

I mean it's not difficult to understand...it seems like a good idea to me. It would give people around here a good variety of PC benchmarks to measure their performance against. It IS a good idea, if anyone would ever stop to think about it instead of assuming I'm being as ass. I'm not, I'm just tired of everyone thinking that every idea of mine is stupid.

Whilst Norton is a very respectable company, it isn't a good benchmark programmer. Since Futuremark has an awesome comparing system on the web, you should use it to compare your system with thousands of people.

laptops are usually much slower than desktops and this one proves to be no exception. the shortcuts companies take for the sake of size drastically reduce performance. depending on the quality of RAM, 256 to 512 really isnt that big of a difference. if you have a pentium 4 at 2.0 ghz and overclock it to 3.2 ghz, the difference in preformance is miniscule.

BTW,

This test has very little to do with the System Board. Primarily all the work is being done in the CPU. Some of the biggest assets for this test will be things like L1 and L2 cache in the CPU. There will be some transfer to the outside memory but it should not be all the great. Any other process running or a request from an IRQ will hamper the test.

I dont know who made you look like a jerk, nor did anyone claim you are stupid. I dont understand why you're stuck on Norton however - perhaps you havent seen that 3DMark 2001SE has a vastly greater database of results by tens of thousands of users?

There is a solid reason that 3DMark is used throughout the PC industry - it works correctly in assessing a systems performance. Norton does not do this. Norton is broken, because it does not do what is it intended to do, which is provide an accurate, comparable benchmark. Why use something thats broken when you have a working item available for free?

Some of us have strong opinions here based on years being involved in different communities. Maybe some of us, even myself, arent open to change. But I doubt it. I probably come across like an ass because youre still stuck on Norton and thats just silly...
