Well, this shouldn't be in the Icon/Cursor Releases forum, but I'll try to help you. What you really need is a good application like Photoshop to create the icon. That's what'll take you practice -- no single person can easily teach you how to make icons. But once you have a finished product, you'll still need to compose it into an icon file. If you're on the Mac, img2icn is a good application for that job.

Click here for some tutorials on Google.

It's not that easy to make icons.

Anyway if you want to try, here's a good tutorial to start:

I actually took some released icons that were also allowed for personal modding, and I started off from that, then added and deleted some stuff. That worked for me well.

also depends if you want still-life icons or graphic icons. Ive done a few still-life icons and all you need their is a good camera, and a good 3rd party masking program, like; easymask or fluidmask

I hate modders who take the work, alter it a tad, call it a personal mod than dont or "forget" to credit the source artist (a personal petpeve of mine, i hope someone agrees with me because off the top of my head I can name 10 people) Im all for sharware but its just always gotten under my skin

Here's a tutorial that I made a while ago... Don't know if you'll find it useful though

Bingo. That is how I started and still learn, explore the works of iconizing Titans like Dave Brasgalla, of which I have utmost respect and have modded atleast 15 different icons and is a personal favorite of mine, pick your favorite iconist and just observe how he/she creates stuff, learn their icons' anatomy.

Mess with hue and saturation, and get to know Photoshop better, start using the pen tool, draw basic shapes, add gradients to those shapes and observe what happens, then do it again, and again on another shape and then again. Imo its a pain in the arse for atleast 2 months, but you will get there

To get you started check these psd files out, made by the great Adam Betts: http://www.artofadambetts.com/weblog/?p=12
