Can someone here point me to an application that i could easily backup a DVD and also be able to convert to H.264 format?
searching around & i've found DVDtheripper, handbrake takes forever hoping here some of u may hint me to one of a nice application to do the job [Payware it's fine], and yeah...it's for MACINTOSH

oh yeah ...of course [copying a DVD i own] and i understand that, sometimes some of DVD i like to have it in my machine and watch it with Quicktime instead of going through my collection cabinet, please try to keep this thread clean, please i really needed to know how to get this done.Try HandBrake. It's for Windows/OS X/Linux, but the OS X version is further along in development.Do I have to say to only use this with your own DVD's to back up? And I don't condone stealing?

Give MediaFork a try...it's based on Handbrake, but it may be faster for you.

The timing's almost the same as HandBrake , HandBrake is wat i've already got i'm looking for something much...much faster than that. There are too many out there i don't really know what i'm paying to be honest, in fact i'm all new to Mac just recently switching, but...anyway, thanks you two very much for the support, appreciated

You probably won't get much faster than that. Compressing does strain the processor a lot. It takes about 1.5-2 hours for a 22 minutes episode on my Windows XP machine running on a P4 2.8 GHz. I haven't made it through on my Mac because I need to do other stuff on it 
, but from when it was running, it was going to be about the same.
DVD compressing is heavy stuff, and I doubt you will get much faster than that, especially for free.
what i do is:
[1] - get the DVD, rip it with MacTheRipper, usually in less than an hour. (BTW, anyone knows if it iPods can handle DVD menus?)
[2] - Convert it to an iPod friendly format with handbrake. Takes about 40 min - 1.5 hours.
[3] - Compress it with DVD Compressor to about half its size, and then resize to an iPod friendly screen size. This takes about 1 - 2 hours.
I compressed Coach Carter (2.16 hrs running time) from 1.16GB to a 683.41MB M4V.

That's exactly wat i had done...took me too long, it's 1.9 GHz PPC G5 so i can't really complain 
i'm gonna have a test with my PC and get back to u guys later on
