iTunes Sound Normalization?

I was wondering if someone could explain to me what/how the Sound Check feature in iTunes works... I mean I assume that the sound check doesn't change (ie reencode) my music files, just adds a comment with some iTunes only playback information?

you're basically correct, except that the volume info in the id3 tag isn't itunes only. if you look here, you'll see that line 4.12 is for volume adjustment. now stop playing with your tags!

Sound Check doesn't add or modify anything in your actual music files. Zip. Zero. Nadda.

It does, however, activate some kind of index in iTunes telling it to adjust its internal volume to x amount for y song.

If x = 100%, find the value of y.

I'm just kidding, just pretending like I was good at math or something. But yeah, I'm pretty sure that's all it does, tells itself to tweak the volume for certain songs but keeps that info to itself rather than scribbling all over your files.

All right. Here is another question that does also concern itunes sound. I bet you that WMP 11 sounds more smoother and deeper than itunes. But itunes is awesome in catalog music. I would be very thankful to you guys if you could tell me how EXACTLY I can make it sound like WMP 11
