please help, not long after installing vista, internet explorer stopped working, thanks

Do you have any anti virus software that might be stopping it? I had a problem with Norton AntiVirus that wouldn't let anything access the internet..

another brilliant creation by Microsoft.

i have avast, i tried to open windows explorer with this disabled, still no luck, then i reset internet explorer, and it worked once only, any other ideas, thanks heaps

#459138

did you check that it's not set to appear offline (check in the tools menu).

Also try restarting your computer, and modem. Finally try the internet explorer troubleshooter, its in windows help (start>help)

First things first... define "not working".

Does it crash? Does it open, but not load any pages? Has it ever worked?

Second, If it did work before and then stopped, what did you change?

@AppleThink Your comments are sooo helpful. :slant:

Seriously, all IE jokes aside and everything, why are you using IE? I mean, you KNOW Firefox is superior. This really is just another sign to use Firefox but if you really want IE, try typing a URL into explorer and it should turn into IE. See if that works.

IE7 for Vista is just as good as firefox if you ask me, firefox is just more customizable. On the other hand IE7 for XP is terrible, but since this is in the Vista Discussion forum he's using it under the right OS. Telling him that he should switch off IE because it commonly does this kind of thing is false, very rarely does this happen and matter of fact this is the first case I've seen where someone says IE7 has quit working. That's becide the fact that he hadn't given us enough information about why it doesn't work. For all we know he could have been downloading a file he probably shouldn't and got a computer virus.

With that being said, how does telling him your personal opinion about browsers help him at all? It doesn't.

----

What kind of errors do you get? Or don't you? How did you post this message if Internet Explorer doesn't work? (unless you had an alternate browser installed beforehand...)

Uh...that sounds pretty naive, no offense. IE7 = IE7, regardless of platform. What makes it any better on Vista than on XP? It's shinier, perhaps? I might understand someone saying that Firefox is worse on OS X than Windows or Linux, but IE7 is no different from platform to platform.

On that note, IE7 still isn't "equal" to Firefox aside from customizability. I know I'm going off topic, but this guy hasn't given ANY information as to what may have caused the problem at all.

I use IE7 for the stupidest reason; when you bookmark a site like deviantart and save it as "dA", in the url bar when you type 'dA' it takes you to deviantart :D Oh and it looks amazing with Vista, the Vista skin in FireFox just doesnt cut it. Although I do miss the dictionary plug in... And firefox is killing the internet, with that adblocker.... site are losing a ton of money because of that app.

Does your file explorer work? (windows +e) You can use that to browse the internub and download firefox, etc. Also try running a manual windows update. You might just have a link issue.

IE is too fugly atm. Hook it up with the IE Pro extenstion and it gets a little bit better as far as usability.

@ Coldwer: I think there's an addon that brings that same functionality to firefox. I had it a few months ago and I'll hook you up with a link if I find it again.

It just seems half assed on XP. Which makes complete sence. Microsoft doesn't want to waste their time working on perfecting it for an OS they'd rather have you NOT using.

actually asty, running vista and xp on the same machine, ie7 on xp popped up a lot faster than firefox on either os or it on vista. While i don't use it regularly (because i am killing the internet according to coldwerturkey - i wouldn't click the ads either way) its useful to recheck a site if i am in a hurry and about to leave, as it loads instantly compared to firefox's massive load time and pf sucking.. (i know its part of the os, maybe mozilla needs to find a way?)

#459428

Its the exact opposite for me, runs quicker plus it doesn't seem half assed if you ask me. But this isnt what we should be talking about is it? We are supposed to be helping gretelburger with the problem he is having.

#459438

no, i have avast, adaware ,avg & tweak but thankyou

#460052

@ coldwerturkey: You can do that with Opera, too.

@ gretelburger: Have you tried to install IE7 again? You could also try to restore your system. And what's the exact error you got?

#460072

Spyro94 that was exactly the problem! Thank you!! : ) I purchased a new desktop pc with vista premium. After a few weeks Internet Explorer stopped working. First I turned everthing off on Norton, then reset the browser, then restarted, then customised the Norton settings and it works perfectly now. I had heard so much about vista and problems I wasn't even looking at Norton. Thanks again!! You saved me a lot of time and frustration!! :)
