Editing buttons in a firefox theme
open a command prompt and run assoc .jar=CompressedFolder and you'll see the magic 
edit: oh, wait, maybe you've done something like that already, and you mean "in which specific file are they?". Well, thumbnail mode is your friend, I don't remember exactly. probably under /browser
The buttons can be found in the browser directory usually name buttons.png but each theme is different.
The tabs are located in the global/toolbar directory and the glyphs for the tabs are found in the global/icons directory.

Thanks for the great response, I'm not sure how to edit the buttons effectively though. I like to use paint for tweaking little things like OB etc but when I open the 'buttons' PNG there are like 2 or 3 pixels of solid black around each button, and I realise this is probably something to do with them blending with the surrounding toolbar. I'm really not experienced at all at image editing, and I dread the prospect of possibly having to use PS!
Most button within Firefox usually have transparency around the buttons to create shadows or bevel/embossed feel to the buttons. If you are using MS Paint, I'm not sure if it is going to give you the results you want. It sounds like when you open and save the files, you are losing the transparency layer of the file.
Photoshop is not that intimidating once you play around with it but you can also use programs like PaintShop Pro and I think Paint.net- which is free. (I could be wrong on the last one.)
Yeah you're definitely right about the loss of transparency, infact I think I think it's more a case of Paint simply not being able to display the transparency at all, it's just odd that when I've edited images for my OB that had trasparent areas around them I didn't have a problem. The only thing I can think of is that they were always bmp format whereas the buttons I'm trying to edit are in png.
