Unable to install new operating systems on my PC

Well, it's come back from the grave to haunt me.

I had installed Ubuntu and everything was running great, UNTIL one day it crashed, and with it the kernel went down as well. Since then I've gotten fresh memory and everything is great... except for the tiny little detail that it won't let me even INSTALL AN OPERATING SYSTEM AT ALL. With both Kubuntu and Ubuntu, the install process worked until the actual installation, in which it froze. XP barely got to partitioning the drives when it crashed.

What's going on here? I know it's a hardware problem, but what exactly!? Please guide me, this is driving me INSANE!

Your memory is probably too slow for your board. That would cause errors like that to occur. Also, make sure you're not overclocking anything.

How many times have you tried it? That happened to me exactly twice, and then, I don't know I guess it's true what they say about the "third".

Well, you're right. I tried it the 3rd time, and it worked.

Now, I have another question. I'm trying to get into an old 30 gig HD with all my music on it from a previous computer, and it's denying me access to it. How do I give myself special permissions to access it?
