The stickied thread that outlines how to convert seems to have disappeared. However you need need two programs:

To open .sit archives (a type of compression that is common on Macs): Stuffit Expander Warning: this site does ask for information from you.

To do the conversion from the Mac .icns to the Windows .ico: Axialis IconWorkShop is what I use, there are others.

NOTE: Sometimes the Mac icons will be packed inside a .dmg (Drive Image) file. You will need to get a Mac user to extract the .icns files as there is no way for Windows users to open .dmg files.

1. Unpack the file downloaded files using your favorite .zip/.rar utility. In the case of .sit files use StuffIt Expander to unpack it.

2. Now using IconWorkShop's Explorer pane navigate to the folder where you unpack the .icns files. Select the on you want, right click and choose the convert option from the menu. You can also batch convert as well. Once IWS is installed it will associate .icns files with it, so you can simple double click a .icns file and IWS will launch, allowing you to convert.

You can also use IWS to convert .ico and .icns to .png files (for ocks and the like). IWS is shareware ($30 or so) however you can use the trial version for 30 days.
