Add A Display To Your Ibook!

Howdy all! I came across this helpful page that tells you how to hack your iBook so that it can support another display.

http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html

It is a simple hack which involves 6 or 7 lines of code which edits OpenFirmware. You see, iBooks with the ATI Radeon can support an additional display, but Apple ships the iBooks with this ability turned off. Why? To keep the iBook from competing with the Powerbooks (which ship with this ability turned on). So with just a few simple lines of code, you can tell your iBook to turn this function on, and voila- support for another display!

I personally applied this hack, and it works beautifully. Although the extra display I have hooked to my iBook now is just an old 800x600 VGA display, it is still an additional 48,000 pixels I didn't have before, space where I can keep Photoshop palettes and IM windows.

Just a note: Do not apply this hack if your iBook has an ATI Rage card- doing so will not give you support for another display, and may actually damage yor iBook.

Follow the directions carefully (they are at the bottom of the webpage), and enjoy your newly acquired screen real estate! (Y)

and for those who're a little nervous about the whole hacking thing, there is a temporary patch. So if you mess up, just restart and the settings revert back to the default.
